ABOUT Axonometric Action Adventures!

I like Action Adventures with a Certain View!

Action! Adventure! The exploration of an intriguing, large environment! Mysterious characters with compelling motives, combat and traversal to get the blood pumping!

--But all from a certain view.

What do we call that viewpoint? Axonometric 3/4? Top-down oblique? Zelda-but-the-old-2D-ones-but-not-quite-because-the-perspective-is-sort-of-all-over-the-place? Old-school-JRPG-sprite-angle? Fine - but what about games like Oceanhorn which use this viewpoint but in 3D perspective?

Man. Finding a name for this perspective that everyone agrees on is a toughie.

We're going with 'Axonometric', as while this also covers the Isometric view (which we'd prefer not to be locked to), it DOES gives us a nicely alliterative title.

Whyfor this view?
* You can explore and fight with a 360 degree view of your environment, while also showing sufficient vertical faces of the surroundings to convey character and a sense of place. Unlike isometric, pixel art from this perspective avoids a preponderance of non-orthographic lines, making visuals less noisy.
* If characters have shadows, this viewpoint makes it very easy to track your position in the world - even under stressful circumstances, making it very suitable for action adventures.
* From a development standpoint, this view allows you to jettison the hateful busywork of managing a traditional third person camera, reduces the need to provide super-detailed models or sprites required for games closer to the action and (especially for games made in 3D) allows you to reuse models across levels by always showing a new angle to the player, delighting and engaging them.

The intention of this group is to collect and curate action adventures usually played from an Axometric, non-isometric view. The criteria for inclusion is fuzzy, as the viewpoint is loosely defined at this point. Additionally, as I'm looking for environments which have a specific personality and intentionality, this might exclude quite a few roguelikes.

Hopefully we'll find a better mission statement later on. Let's get started...!

It would be nice to have a proper name.
Two years ago, I along with the rest of the guys at Rain released World to the West. I think it is well within the description.

I think perhaps DOTA2 should be avoided, though. It has the perspective, but so does most every Moba. Of course, that might depend on what we are trying to define. If it's a look, then fine, but then Warcraft and Starcraft fit the bill too. Strategy and tactics trump over exploration and adventure in both cases.

Do a google search of Axonometric Action Adventure, and you get a certain set of games.
It sounds to me like you want to also include the results from a google search of "Top Down Action Adventure".

Perhaps top-down perspective is the term you are looking for, despite the fact that if it is invoked, people tend to exclude the Axonometric style almost entirely.

Like, I'd put DOTA2 in here, but it's a MOBA. Beautiful Axonmetric graphics, though!
