Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood

Intro

Wow... Ive been warned that this game was bad but damn... Its worse than i though.
I mean, the graphics are actually pretty good and the initial cut scene really sets the tone right for a good Werewolf the Apocalypse story. But everything starts to go downhill once you actually start playing the game.

Background

First i must clarify that i am indeed a veteran player of table top RPGs and my fisrt contact with Werewolf the Apocalypse when back in the 90ies when a friend lend me a copy of the book and we played a few sessions. So im extremely familiar with the setting and the lore of not only Werewolf but many other World of Darkness titles, like Vampire the Masquerade and Mage the Ascension.

Story

And thats actually the worst offender in this particular game: the writing. Its sooo CRINGEY and silly. Im not even sure the person who wrote the story actually took time to read the books. I mean, important concepts like Caern, Umbra and other are just used randomly in conversations like they have no deeper meaning. The werewolf pack is presented as a bunch of hippie looking eco terrorists. The main character is just your average roided up angry white guy. In the prologue you barely get the chance to be introduced to you wife and then a few moments later shes murdered by a Black Spiral Dancer just to set up so dumb "revenge plot". The writing here just feels like so cheap comic book, no weight or deepness of character, just some usual cliche events happening with no feeling or emotion added to them.

Gameplay

Gameplay is as generic as it gets. The wolf form, lupus, is your standard video game sneak mechanic. You also have the usual Detective vision from Batman and many other game, just here its called "spirit vision" or something. In combat you turn into the werewolf form, Crinos, and then the game becames some cheap hack and slasher. It presents to you many random mechanics, but basically you just have to mash your way, from one enemy to another. It feels really like a cheap and unpolished version of Devil may Cry or something.

Final thoughts

Overal this game is an EXTREME DISAPPOINTMENT, especially if you are a fan of Werewolf the Apocalypse
