Mods to make the game more like Dwarf Fortress?
I'm fine with all the current technology in the game, I'm just talking about the mechanics and having something like the adventure mode that's in Dwarf Fortress.

Thank you in advance.

You can do this sort of in Rimworld. you need a mod called "More Faction Interaction" this wil give more random quests and let pirates expand over time.
If you ad this in with the mod that adds in more factions. you can have a roaming party going from killing a pirate outpost to friendly outpost to sell of loot and buy food. you would have to discipline your self from making a proper base. maybe you could do that in the scenario editor too (disable farming and building).

it could ALMOST be a new Minecraft
Minecraft was actually inspired by Dwarf Fortress.
@AIP yeah i know.. though they're different and i can see how minecraft would be more appealing to most, especially younger people. it's very easy to learn.

"More Faction Interaction" looks interesting, will try..

yeah "Core Dwarf Fortress is not changing!" that's their problem right there.. i understand they have a small following of fans by now, but i honestly believe this game is so unique and cool that it could ALMOST be a new Minecraft or at least bigger than the biggest Paradox titles..
Too bad i'll probably never play it, and millions of other won't either because the UI just sucks.

Dwarf Fortress is so rich, so elegant, so masterfully done... But it's so darn horrible looking and suffers from such a terrible UI that even players who are determined to force themselves to try to play it can easily just give up...

I think it's a revolutionary sort of take on gaming, to be honest, and it's a wonderful game. It's probably the most wonderful game I have never been able to play... :/

I can't get past the UI. I can't get past the need for tilesets that can't be used as a true overlay/replacement for the ASCII underpinnings of the game. I can't get past the sort of underlying elitist garbage that "well, if you can't look at this waterfall display and enjoy it, then you're not a gamer/smart enough/gud enough to be worthy of playing Dwarf Fortress... Go home, plebe."

I played friggin Xtrek, or a game much like it, on library computers in college for goodness sakes. I played PC Games before EGA video for crying out loud. I played friggin PC games before there was friggin anything more than a tinny PC speaker...

And, ALL of those games had better UI schemes and more appealing visual presentation than Dwarf Fortress does today.

And, that's a shame. Millions of players who would likely end up loving that game will never play it because it's far too inaccessible to actually be called a "PC Game."

Indeed. When i was young DF (but better graphics) was how i imagined how future games could be. I'd say it even surpasses my dreams (apart from graphics which i imagined better, even if the graphics at the time was horrible!).

It's a game that is, and will be, considered a cult classic and a genre changer, something which was "ahead of its time".

Someone needs to do this properly but with better UI and at least with Rimworld level of graphics. I really dislike that DF doesn't even have animations (even Rimworld type of simplistic animations would be ok and is more pleasing to look at than stuff moving 1 frame at a time), and that will probably not change with Steam version either.

I'm happy we have Rimworld though. DF setting is a lot cooler though and its more complex, more "epic".

Gnomoria was a good start, even though it never really made it further than a "start" at a graphical DF. Ingnomia is a spiritual successor to that and is free, but I don't think the plans for that go further than finalizing what Gnomoria "should have been."

DF is a big game. It's got a bunch of stuffs in it... Even so, since there is so much "under the hood" there we wouldn't demand so much in the way of graphical exceptionalism. I'd be very, very, very happy with a DF game with Gnomoria/Ingnomia graphics. No problem at all and I would happily slave my CPU to playing that game.

IMO, someone else will do it before Tarn et al decides to finally port DF to a "real PC game."

Nobody will do it "before Tarn". DF has a 30-year development plan for a reason.

Gnomoria seemed to fall into the trap of "more stuff just for the sake of having more stuff", unfortunately. If you wanted a sword then you couldn't just make a sword - you had to make three different parts separately and then assign someone to combine them at a forge. And aside from being unnecessarily tedious and cluttering the UI with a million useless items, much of it made absolutely no sense, like having wooden hilts for those swords.

A lot of development time was seemingly wasted on pointless stuff that just made the game more tedious without really adding any meaningful content. Which could help explain why it was never finished.
Honestly I prefer the ASCII tile set; I like imagining how things look and I like the clean lines of it. A more user friendly interface would be appreciated though.

I agree that imagination is key to the enjoyment of these types of games, but I would submit that having graphical tiles does not change this aspect. You still have to imagine a lot, perhaps just as much as with ASCII characters. I would add that in some games (thinking of Cataclysm DDA here) having a tileset is a big bonus because you can display more different tiles, then ASCII characters are available, so you have a clearer interface due to less reused symbology.

People keep taking stabs at it... Not at DF, specifically, but DF "clones." Eventually, someone will hit upon a winning formula that combines the history-generating and storytelling aspect of DF with "gameplay" and "presentation." Not that there won't still be DF fans, just that the longer that a pie is in the oven, the more chance someone will opt for cake... (ie: "Strike while the iron is hot.")

IMO, Gnomoria is a good example of great potential only halfway completed... It's as if everything was set up to be a really deep, intricate, gaming experience and then it never got past that and some things were just tacked on as placeholders for "neat ideas." And, even if everything present in the release had been fully fledged out, there would still need to be a great deal of work to do. No relationship system, morale system is kludgy/nonexistent, etc..

It's still not a bad game and I played it a great deal. Got my money's worth, so to speak. But, then again, my favorite playthrough was stopped by a jobs bug... That's one of the few "gamebreaking" bugs that's terminal.

Taking stabs is the furthest anyone will get. There is no winning formula, there is only the code that requires an estimated 30 years to complete, and DF already has a 17-year headstart.

I don't know if anyone in history has ever been able to reliably plan something out for thirty years in such a dynamic environment. The concepts may not change, but the tools and medium will.

But, I hope he's successful.

There's no magic to it, though. It's an idea. It's a concept. It's partially formed, I suppose, according to whatever "Thirty Year" plan you've mentioned. But, that "plan" is still just an "idea." Others can use that same notion to develop a game based on the same concepts found in DF and that game could have much more success.

It doesn't really matter, though. At the end of the day they'd be separate products. What does matter is if someone does it better and it hits the market at the right time. I, for one, hope that happens at least sometime in the next 13 years... :)
The point is, it takes time to develop a game of that complexity. Most of those other developers will simply implement a fraction of DF content and gameplay, so there will not be any "someone else will do it before Tarn et al decides to finally port DF to a "real PC game.".
you idiots made 1 single mod suggestion in this entire thread.
you listed some 3 mods, one guy said "go outside" (that old chestnut) and multiple people said to just go play DF.
the hell is wrong with you? just name some mods that add some systems present in DF.
HERE I'll show you how its done-

was that so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hard?
I know I'm being needlessly harsh but its 12:30am as of writing and I am just so fed-up with the way no one can just answer the question being asked in these steam threads.
here I'm just gonna go on and list a few more that help ever so slightly push us in a DF direction.
