XCOM 2 is a game that never seems to get old to me. Even after beating it a 5th time, I find myself looking back sometime later, considering another play through. The emotional roller coaster you experience throughout the campaign is something else, as your soldiers, all with unique names, styles, and skill-sets can die in any battle from any little mistake, permanently. This adds a lot of room for players to build a kind of story to their war's timeline, as they race against time to stop a very intelligent enemy that is always aiming to make it as hard as possible for you to win. Actually, in most cases the odds are even against you, and new players to the series are likely to lose the war a few times before finally claiming victory.

... Did I mention that you can actually lose the war?...
That's right, there's no holding the player's hand here, no leading you through the story line with breadcrumbs to reward you with some inevitable victory and a pat on the back. If you don't put in the work and make smart calls throughout the campaign, you will lose the war, no "Game Over, try again" screen, no "Here is the nearest checkpoint" gig. You lose, and you start all over again from the beginning. This adds a level of urgency to the game, where suddenly it's no longer about -when you win-, but -how you win-.

Oh, you think the darkness is your ally, but you merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn’t see the light until I was already a man; by then, it was nothing to me but blinding!
