A High-Octane Journey Through a Dystopian World
Introduction
Note: It is treated as a reboot and not a continuation to Mirror's Edge (2007) but it does have a prequel i.e. The Mirror's Edge Exordium Comic which gets hinted in the game as well.

We play as Faith Connors in a beautiful dystopian white city of Glass. Everything in Glass is interconnected using a high-scale surveillance system called Grid. Most people in glass work for corporations whereas Faith is recognized as a Runner. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2921421898 Runners are known for their expertise in parkour that allows them to traverse rooftops swiftly making one a perfect candidate for quick or illegal delivery jobs.

Gameplay
Graphics:
The city of Glass uses vibrant colors, minimalist design and sleek architecture presenting a memorable environment to explore day and night. Each character and their fashion are designed to seamlessly fit into such a world, showcasing an impressive attention to detail.

Difficulty:
It can get a bit overwhelming to finish a singular objective at hand until familiar with fair amount of mechanics that construct it’s parkour feature but with enough practice the feeling of pulling a perfectly exercised sequence of precise maneuvers is highly rewarding.

To help players catalyse this process of overcoming such case of difficulty, the game offers optional assistance as Runner Vision, Player Echoes & Tutorials.

Content & Replayability:
There are a total of 13 Campaign Missions, 15 Side Missions (that requires specific criteria to be unlocked), 5 collectable types & open world activities that encourages a player to explore the hidden corners of Glass.

Some of the open world activities are:

Delivery Jobs: Runners are usually hired to deliver packages within a set time limit & specific to case instructions.
These instructions break up delivery jobs in-game into 3 sub-categories:
  1. Dead Drop: No further restrictions.
  2. Fragile: Runner must not stumble more than once before completing the delivery.
  3. Covert: Runner must not allow themselves to be seen by anyone from K-Sec.
GridNodes:
These are special locations that requires fair puzzle solving for completion. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2921421266 Attached screenshot displays a typical GridNode. Sabotaging the terminal located at top the node while eluding installed security measures offers worthy in-game rewards.

Dash:
There exists 22 unique parkour-based time trial challenges. Players will be placed in a competitive skill group based on their performance under every Dash. Skill groups in an ascending order are classified under 5 subdivisions of Plastic, Glass, Silver, Black & Red each.

Every content in this game has a quick replay feature hence, making Mirror's Edge Catalyst a highly replayable product.

Combat:
It is a blend between parkour & martial arts that allows for divergent takedown effects. Combat feels exceptional as long as there's momentum but when there's not, it becomes clunky & awkward. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2921422133 Enemies will shoot as good as stormtroopers & often overreact on slightest of nudges.

Audio
SFX:
Cues of footsteps or actions such as running, climbing, landing or gasps of panic when falling augments the fluidity of gameplay experience.

Music:
OST produced by Solar Fields is a perfect fit for this setting featuring a range of electronic genres that carefully captures the emotion of its surroundings.

Theme song: CHVRCHES - Warning Call showcases a beautiful synthpop.

Verdict
In a world of Glass, few surfaces may have been left unpolished but on a complete scale the presentation is nothing less than professional & extraordinary.

Score:
95/100

Story
You play as Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley, from the movies. You've been offered a position aboard the Torrens ship for a mission to retrieve a flight recorder from your mother's ship i.e. the Nostromo, by Christopher Samuels. You soon begin to discover the truth about the station & it's past, their members, it's politics, the betrayals, the fact that you're on board with survivors ready to kill & an Alien species on your tail. Every tragedy struck on Amanda made me sad, when she was disappointed I was too, one of the few games where I really connected with the protagonist. It also provides satisfactory lore & easter eggs for the fans. Everything is well crafted & equally interesting to learn at any point.
Gameplay
It took me 25 hours to finish it on Hard difficulty with that included lots of exploration. (Lengthy single-player games are a rare gems) It is not only limited to being a survival horror but also contains some action elements to help you get out of certain situations without ducking around. Anyways for majority, stealth is your only option as you cannot kill the Xenomorph & resources required to face other enemies are limited & hard to find. Resources include ammo for weapons like: Revolver, Shotgun, Bolt Gun, Flamethrower, Stun Baton, Maintenance Jack & a range of useful craft-able & upgradable items: Smoke Bomb, Flashbang, EMP Mine, Pipe Bomb, Noisemaker, Medkit & a Flare that you can use to your advantage. You are also equipped with a motion tracker that shows on a horizontal plane the position of another living entity nearby in a quarter of a circle. Whenever such entity gets closer, device beeps at a higher rate & pitch. Graphics are phenomenal. Sevastopol is huge to explore & very well designed. Space looks great, the open world-ish feature only makes exploration or navigation immersive.
AI
You encounter 3 types of enemies. Here's a list describing them in an ascending order of frequency of encounter:
  1. Humans: These are super dumb & very annoying. You can shoot, burn & fool them quiet easily (like IRL). They patrol a specified area & shoot you on sight. You can direct other enemy types at them or vice-versa, so you don't have to directly deal with them.
  2. Androids: Smarter than humans but still dumb. You can still shoot, burn & fool them but it is a tad difficult. Killing them requires adequate resources. Avoiding them is an acute option in most cases as it will save resources.
  3. The Alien: That thing, that terrifying thing is smarter than everyone. You cannot kill it or fool it, in-fact it will fool you & kill you. You can only hide in lockers, vents or under the table but it will eventually trail your smell & find you. The slightest of sound will notify it of your exact position, you can hear loud thuds getting louder & in no time, it kills you. It's behaviour is totally random, there is no way to script your way around it. Not to mention that it adapts to your playstyle, it learns as you progress.
Everytime I enter a new area my first objective is to search for a hiding place. Any time for the story when I have to perform a task that generates sound, I run to a hiding spot & wait for it to show up if it is bound to. The only upper hand you have is to challenge it with fire. Whenever pointed at the alien it won't rush but still approach you slowly & carefully, starring into your eyes unless you pull the trigger, it will then retreat for a short time, only to comeback & make you sweat again.
Any instance where it is mentioned or if even there's a possibility of it being around, I feel terrified & slowly crouch all the way to a save point where I feel highly rewarded. The AI does not cheat, there is no 50-50, if you're hiding & it knows, it will directly approach you or play with you to bait you out. Every death means you took the wrong steps.
Audio
Not only the beeps on your motion tracker but the heavy footsteps of alien when it is around creates immediate tension & when you hear it's terrifying shriek, the only thing you can do is say "oh s#it" & accept your fate. SFX are done well. Though I was a bit disappointed by the frequency at which android keeps repeating it's dialogues. Fear inducing horror score was on point, everything on my screen & on my headphones matched to perfection producing nothing but a racing heart. Andrea Deck's voice of Amanda Ripley was remarkable.
Verdict
It is a really good game, sure there are many things it could've done better, there are exploits that can be taken advantage of to make this journey less difficult but I'd be lying if I said the cons matter underneath everything this title offers. Score: 100/100
