Buy NieR: Automata.

Probably not on Steam, since Platinum never patched the game's performance problems. Probably buy the PS4 version instead (I played it in full on an original-launch PS4 and it was just fine that way). But buy NieR: Automata on some platform, regardless. Also, if opting for PC, you'll definitely need a controller- the KBM inputs are far from optimal (and frankly, they probably never could be, due to the genre-shifting nature of the game).

You basically have two options: Go in blind, or catch up on the universe it takes place in. Going in blind is fine. You'll still get a lot out of it. But if you're all caught up, then NieR: Automata will have a profoundly greater impact than it would otherwise have by going in with no prior experience to the series. Trust me. It's worth it.

So, if you didn't play the original NieR, go watch this whole 17 hour LP of the first game . If you want more background then watch Mr. Clemps' two-part analysis of Drakengard (1) (2) , two-part of Drakengard 3 (1) (2) , and three-part of the original NieR (1) (2) (3) after watching the LP. Clemps is a cool guy, maybe you'll like his sense of humor. But why Drakengard? The NieR series is a direct spin-off of Drakengard, and the first game takes place directly after Drakengard, with Drakengard 3 being a prequel to Drakengard. Drakengard 2 isn't important, because it's shit-garbage and has no bearing on NieR or any other Drakengard game (but you can watch its Clemps analysis anyway, if so inclined. You can find out exactly why it's so terrible, that way). None of the Drakengard games or the original NieR are very fun to play, because they were made by Cavia, a company known for mechanically-terrible games, and the two Resident Evil lightgun shooters on the Wii. That's why offloading that work onto others through the internet is a far, far better solution, even if you miss out on some of those hands-on things not covered by the LP or the analyses.

Thankfully for all of us, NieR: Automata is fun as fuck to play.

Now, when you do start up the game, don't ever watch the video that plays after waiting on the main menu until you've gotten multiple core endings, by replaying the game a couple times. It's the single most spoilery fucking game trailer since the original NieR... But don't worry, it's got varying levels of different content on each replay, with the third playthrough being entirely new content that you wouldn't get otherwise. Just load the game after getting a full ending [the game will even remind you about this after each ending], just understand that it's not at all optional, it's completely mandatory, or else you've damaged the experience for yourself (supposing you've enjoyed the game).

That's all.

Also this is my steam ladder, apparently

"If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea."

"The adventure never ends... We'll set off on a journey sometime somewhere to the stars again. And the new adventure will begin."
-Outlaw Star

"We are our choices. We invent ourselves by virtue of the multitude of our choices. We do not know what we want and yet we are responsible for what we are - that is the fact. We only become what we are by the radical and deep-seated refusal of that which others have made of us."
-Mashup of multiple Jean-Paul Sartre quotes

"If there were no God, It would be necessary to invent him."

"Yesterday we obeyed kings and bent our necks before emperors. But today we kneel only to truth"
