You Are Here to Slay the Princess

I went into Slay the Princess expecting a strange visual novel about, well, slaying a princess.

I got something considerably more complicated.

Nothing Is Ever Quite What It Seems

The premise is simple.

There is a Princess in a cabin.

You are supposed to kill her.

That's it.

Except it isn't.

Every choice changes something. Every death sends you somewhere new. The Princess changes. The world changes. Even your understanding of what is happening changes.

Eventually, you stop asking what the game wants you to do and start asking whether you can trust anyone—including yourself.

The Characters Are the Heart of It

What makes Slay the Princess work isn't the premise.

It's the characters.

The Princess is fascinating because she can be so many different things depending on how you approach her. The Narrator is equally important, constantly trying to convince you that he understands what is happening.

And then there is you.

The player.

The game constantly plays with the relationship between the person making the choices and the character making them.

Eventually, the distinction starts to blur.

Beautifully Uncomfortable

The art style is strange, unsettling, and beautiful.

The voice acting is phenomenal.

The writing can be hilarious one moment and deeply uncomfortable the next.

But underneath all of that is something surprisingly emotional.

Slay the Princess is a game about perception, fear, trust, identity, and the stories we tell ourselves about other people.

And somehow, beneath all the weirdness, it manages to be incredibly human.

Final Thoughts

I don't think Slay the Princess is a game you simply finish.

It's a game you experience.

Then you sit there for a while afterward and think about what you just played.

It's strange.

It's unsettling.

It's funny.

It's beautiful.

And, eventually, it becomes something much more personal than the title suggests.

Slay the Princess.

But first, maybe ask yourself why you were so certain she needed to die.
