TL;DR If you like the basic loop of hunting and crafting, get it and stick with it.

Wow where do I start. With about 360 hours at the time writing, there's still so much to do and see.

This game is absolutely insane. The real highlight of this game for me is the depth and complexity of the combat mechanics. This is my first MH game and I have never seen such depth in any other game before.

Right off the bat, you are presented with 14 different weapons to choose from and each of those weapons have different upgrade paths and stats and abilities. Some are quite easy to get used to, and some might take a long while. But if you want to completely master a weapon, you're looking at about 100 hours of gameplay with that one weapon.

The story is pretty meh but there are some standout moments.

Despite the rocky launch, Capcom has reduced the disconnection issues by a fair amount, although not completely and the PC version is almost always behind consoles in terms of content updates.

The gameplay loop here is so deceptively simple. And if it clicks for you, it can be really addictive. Hunt monsters, get materials, craft gear, hunt more powerful monsters, get rarer materials, craft stronger gear. That is pretty much what the game is.

It's not quite open world though. There is a hub area where you can run around in and do all your crafting and buying and selling items. Accept missions from an NPC or a quest board and you'll be taken to one of the five major areas in the game. The areas are expansive and beautifully designed with almost Dark Souls level of interconnectivity. The environment can be used in several different ways to compliment your hunt.

There is also a mode called 'Expedition' where you can roam around the different areas hunting monsters or gathering materials or just simple exploration to see where exactly this long twisted tunnel leads to. Expedition can last as long as you want, but the hunting missions have a time limit ranging from 10 minutes to 50 minutes, depending on the difficulty of the mission.

Regular content and patch updates keeps the game alive. Now with the Iceborne expansion announced, the game is going to grow so much. New locales, new monsters, new moves, several Quality of Life improvements and even Photo Mode is coming.
