I wish I could leave a mixed review for this game.

If you were around for the E3 announcement for this game back in 2019 and 2020, you can definitely see the drastic difference in art direction, narrative, and vision that Techland had in 2019 versus the final product they advertised and sold in 2022.

This is in no short fault to the sudden firing of multiple staff back in 2020, with the most prominent being Chris Avellone, who lost his position due to a series of allegations against him. They were then later replaced by a new internal team.

The only way I could describe this game is a salvaged remnant of a Dying Light 2 that could've been one of the best RPG games of 2022, lending it's narrative and design prowess to that of what made F2, FNV, DOS2, Alpha Protocol the classics they are considered to be in the gaming sphere. You can find the contents of this especially near the end of the game, where the E3 demo has been re-appropriated as the literal epilogue of the game. This epilogue is followed by assets that were only meant to have been used in that archaic version of Dying Light 2.

The Peacekeepers were originally meant to be a morally grey class of ruthless authoritarians attempting to salvage order in a chaotic world, the survivors an anarchic mingle of individuals attempting to make ends meet, and Renegades somewhere in between. However, in this current vision of the game, they stand as no more but a different coating of the survivor faction, with different fashion and apparel. The world and narrative makes no more sense than to simply be a device to drive the player towards action. All of this were results of a shift in vision, art direction, and narrative caused by the change in leadership and makeshift decisions made at the executive level.

This problem doesn't pertain to Dying Light 2, but many other games. Another cult classic, Vampires Masquerade 2, recruited legendary talent Brian Mitsoda only to drop him later into development because he was only brought on solely for publicity. The entire team recruited gets kicked, only to be replaced by a new internal team. As of right now, Vampires Masquerades 2 is in permanent hiatus, with no news or development in circulation.

What I'm trying to point at is that Dying Light 2 should not necessarily be viewed as a video game, but as a product of the gamedev space at the corporate level. The game is still fun and certainly enjoyable, but you can feel how decisions at the executive level ultimately influenced and limited the potential of what Dying Light 2 could've been. This is still a solid game that was made with blood, sweat, and tears of countless Polish game devs, but at the same time, I finished this game imagining what it could've been. From Cyberpunk to now, the gamedev scene has been filled with disappointment fueled by executive incompetency: we're told and shown that there's something better, but because of indecision, internal conflict, and broken incentive structures at the corporate level, we'll always be left with a bad taste in our mouth. At the end of the day, we shift the blame on the devs for not finishing the game, and move on looking for another Cyberpunk to pick apart on Youtube.

Was standing on ceiling breach with Sledge and Montagne as IQ as the last 3 people on the team along with 5 other enemies

Sledge starts playing John Cena in mic

Breaches and all 3 of us unplannedly fall through the celing

Enemy smoke throws gas at our landing position which I run towards him to avoid it and kill him along the way

I shoot and kill 2 more people and then our Montagne goes to the other side and shoots one more

We win the round after sandwiching the last guy

11/10 would John Cena through the ceiling again unexpectedly with our sledge
