Disco Elysium is the greatest non-action role-playing game I have ever played.

I do not want to compare it to the drama and scale of The Witcher 3, the freedom of the Elder Scrolls or the epicness of Mass Effect, because all of those games are action-oriented and awesome in their own right.

Disco Elysium is a game of dice, extrapolated to the scale of a beautifully crafted, atmospheric world that is used to drive one of the most complex choice-oriented and consequence-driven gameplay mechanics I have seen in 30 years of gaming. Parallels to Planescape: Torment have been raised and I agree, even if both games are fundamentally different in other ways.

I will not write about the story, because even the slightest hints could contain spoilers. It really is magnificently diverse and I am happy that I went into this totally blind, not having read any reviews or seen anybody playing it. And so should you, if you read this and have even the smallest interest in playing an intelligent, deep and captivating game where "role-playing" is not just a tagline, it is the absolute basis of everything in it.
