The game requires a product key. Why is this suddenly needed and how should I find it?

Hello! I am a huge admirer of this game, but every time I try to edit anything in my game when it starts. The game will crash, telling me it created a 'MLCrashDump10.dmp' in my documents folder and was supposed to let the team know about this issue.

basically, everything happened as intended BESIDES the great war starting. I beefed up Sweden, took over norway, min maxed what i could, stacked everything without cheats or mods for at least 100 turns. and...... nothing happened.
