I wasn't sure what you meant by that, Gentool IS the d3d8.dll, which you have to load with the game for Gentool to function and enable its enhancements. The Gentool dev stated on reddit that he needs to update his file to properly recognize the new executables in the steam update to fix this black screen problem.

Alternatively, you can use the launch commands -xres 1280 -yres 800 to force an arbitrary resolutions, but FOV is not great and some cut-scenes are broken.
