Soma: Review

Soma is a futuristic, and mind boggling masterpiece by Frictional Games. In my personal opinion, this is one of my favourite games of all time, and it's so underrated compared to other horror titles including their own Amnesia: Dark Descent.
Soma delivers a great experience with it's deep story and it's ability to keep you learning as you go by data mining the voice comms around Pathos-II.

You play as a man named Simon who is from Toronto, Canada. He was in a car crash with a girl named Ashley who did not make it. You go to this man called David Munshi who does a brain scan. Seems pretty normal but the story quickly changes and you are thrown right in, which is what I like about Frictional Games, there isn't a long beginning sequence ever. You jump right in.

When you find yourself in a different environment, some of the machines seem to speak like humans, some of them are friendly(but somewhat lost)...some of them are not. What I found really interesting and kept me, the player interested, was the data mining sequences, which reminded me of similar sequences in Amnesia, though these ones were triggered by the player manually.

The best part about this game was the story and environment, you certainly feel isolated when you realise where Pathos-II is and what's going on everywhere else. I'm unsure it beats Penumbra for me in that sense, but I still really like it. It's very difficult to describe much more without ruining anything.

In conclusion, I'd highly suggest playing this one and supporting Frictional Games with another brilliant title, would love to see a follow up to this game (not sure how they'd do that though). If you aren't into horrors I'd still suggest this title as it's not a harsh horror with jumpscares as such, more of the environment and maybe enemy encounters. There is a safe mode available that basically make enemy A.I. really dumb. I also believe there is a mod on Workshop that increases all the enemies abilities and makes them more difficult, if you'd like a challenge.
