Despite being labeled as Metroidvania, this game puts way bigger focus on combat, than on exploration. And for a reason - while i enjoyed exploration in Hollow Knight, it felt like combat part of Hollow Knight was flat and dull. And that's where Nine Sols didn't let me down - combat is the main focus of the game, but at cost of exploration element being kind of dull (but not by much).

Game world and exploration - Game world is definitely much smaller than of one in Hollow Knight, and much more flat regarding how much secrets or backtrack possibilities it holds, but honestly, combat makes up for it. Platformer part isn't drawing inspiration from one particular game, but from a lot of different games, and this is welcome, because it feels unique. And game isn't exactly giving you places where you must show platforming skills, aside from one soulscape, and some parts of Empyrean Distinct.

Art style - it is very lovely. I love games which come after cartoony/unique artstyle (and not chase this "realism" trend), because this is what make them so nice to look at. But ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, scenes being such grim and cruel at times, despite being in hand drawn art style.

Story - can't say im deep into stories, but i would lie if i wasn't touched by it. The world in Nine Sols is neverending nightmare, with cruel events, with immoral choices done by all characters (and only one character being innocent, you will know them when you see them). And whole story revolves around "You lost it all when you tried to see too far" (attempt to defy nature and find a way to achieve immortality), and "proper" main story ending is about not saving Solarians, but to become a good person and die with dignity. What a way to end your own species. But aside from main point of story, around which game events revolve, it also tells us a story of Solarian race themselves. Also like the way we get a hint at that Lear and Yi know each-other through spacetime, and they actually made kind of time loop (present Yi somehow teaches past Lear, and past Lear teaches present Yi, without Yi's teachings (whatever how that happened) Fangshi Guild might have never succeeded in past, and likewise Yi would have not succeeded at present without Lear's teachings).

Regarding difficulty of game, i wouldn't say that final boss is hard (and in general, game is overall "hard", but when it comes to relative difficulty, i found that easiest boss would definitely be Jiequan because of simple attack set and everything being in single beat), she is just kind of annoying to get used to. Personally, i had most issues with first phase (way too slow attacks), but once first phase got manageable, second phase and third phase were much easier to master relative to first phase, because her attacks become more rhythmic. Also, you probably want Swift Descend jade for third phase, because after screen-wide slash attacks you would definitely want to be on ground as soon as possible to perform unbounded counter.

If you love "live - fight - die - repeat" style of games, especially Souls-like, and don't mind it being 2D platformer, then you would definitely love this game, the combat in Nine Sols feels truly fluent compared to HK.

People like to say that first game had better story, i can't agree nor disagree. It had different storytelling, and was open for interpretation (and this caused the aforementioned "original game story better" opinion), that's all.

Mechanics wise, sequel is major step up compared to original game, because of A LOT of new devices, so it never gets stale at any point in game. And of course, extra (golden gates) levels combine all the mechanics you learn throughout the game, being true test of your tinkering capabilities.

Puzzles at times are a bit convoluted (major improvement compared to first game), sometimes requiring you to exploit "undesired" situations, such as requiring you to deliberately cross two (or even one) laser types, and these types of puzzles that were hardest for me, everything else (including most golden gates) were solved in 2-7 mins each.
