I can't enjoy the game-play, which is turn-based and I can't really bring myself to play any further than two or three missions. I really want a gruesome, dark, and brilliantly crafted game and Darkest Dungeon fits that bill but again, turn based combat.

The mechanics are great; your aiming and weapon selection really entails some good combat.

Character design is flamboyant and pretty-boy as all get out.

Game is visually appealing and the voice acting is pretty good.

I skip all cutscenes. I'm not here to watch a movie. I have ZERO grasp on the story and can't comment.

I initially did not recommend this game because of this next point, but I think the points I listed earlier may bring it out of thumbs-down territory.

Lastly, you don't start at level a "power level" 0, you start at 750 since some update (now 1100 if I recall correctly) or something and all that sense of progression was thrown out the window. You can still continue to climb though so I don't understand what exactly is happening here. It's tied to equipment afaik. Bigger number better? I don't know if its that simple, and why it starts you with something I feel is awfully high given how you rose through the numbers before these updates.

I got this on Steam specifically to avoid EA's Origin launcher, and the game installs it anyways and you have to launch Origin through Steam to play the game through Origin.

It's cancer but with more steps.

Very enjoyable; single-player only

Great music.

You can build space stations.
You can build fleets consisting of mining vessels, or of combat ships ranging from the size of like a large bus, to the size of Texas.

You have different "campaigns" but they're all in the same world, they just place you in different locations and with different starting monies and ships.

When you start a new game, they all progress way differently than the next. This game simulates an economy and it goes different ways. This can lead to a bunch of friendly factions not being able to produce enough ships to fight a Xenon threat and eventually getting wiped out, to two giant superpowers that left everybody else in the dust.

do not install

it has great mechanics and plays pretty well

but people will expect you to have god knowledge after like 2 hours of gameplay under your belt and wont stfu and ree at you in the chat

and since the game is dead, toxic players are the majority

and that wouldn't be a problem if you could queue with your friends, but they REMOVED that feature at some point in the past. calling that a dumb move would be a massive understatement.

Everything beneath this is before I found out they added a Ruthless game mode, which is really freakin' cool. In this mode, you have extreme item scarcity even from vendors. And since items (gems) are also where you get your skills weirdly enough, you aren't steamrolling like you could normally. Ruthless fixes a lot (not all) of the problems I had that you can read in the rest of the review.

----------------------------

The power creep is INSANE. I'm told this game used to be hard, but everything just up and dies. There's no substance. You enter a zone, you cast a spell, your screen lights up and you get blinded by whatever mass murder you do.

My greatest complaint is because of that, you can't really enjoy the monsters. Their designs, sounds, how they operate.

Nothing else good about the game can fix this problem.

Not the incredible over encompassing art design.
Not the epic level variety.
Not the interesting sound effects and GUI.
Not the sick, gigantic passive skill tree.
Not the huge variety in character builds.
Not the extensive end game.

I don't know what end game is like, which is what the game is supposedly focused on. But if that is where the meat and potatoes of the game is at, AND I have to "play" (in other words, walk with ZERO effort) for 40+ hours just to GET THERE in the first place to enjoy it? A cope I see in chat a whole bunch is that the first ten acts are the tutorial. This is just an excuse for poor game development.

Also, your character looks awful from the get go to the end game and the only solutions are MTX. There is zero chance you will look awesome and armorclad without paying money.

I only recommend it because it is free and NOT pay to win outside of your own characters' DRIP.

The devs also pump out new content all the time.

Updated review after 100 some odd hours and since the game left early access.

previous review:
"like left for dead
except way way worse
and by worse i dont mean the game-play is bad
i mean you're f*cked."

updated review:
Game is really hard. Had a level last up to six and a half hours. Though that was just grinding at a checkpoint halfway through, which does not erase previous attempts' time. Realistically from start to finish without the failed attempts it was probably more like two hours.

Game is balanced around four players. There are no scaling mechanisms for fewer players. This game is meant to be hard. Seriously. This is some CBT levels of difficulty. I just wish it didn't take 3 hours to get through a level. Guess its not that bad because I can't stop playing.

I gotta say though, getting closer and closer to a level completion after spending ALL morning on it, and then finally crossing the finish line, really is euphoric. Maybe less in a "I completed it" way and more like "the shackles are off and I'm free" sort of way. But still.

I played a full six hours my first time launching it. I expect to sink more into it.

You walk around this huge world exploring and surviving the elements. There's cold and hot temperatures you gotta prepare yourself for. Your body has Needs such as sleep, hunger, and thirst.

You fight creatures n sh!t. Very Dark Souls-y in combat.

Your position isn't marked on any map. You do have a map however, and you're given a compass. Hope you are good with directions.

Oh yeah, and you start off with a debt to pay off.

Factorio, but different enough to stand out as its own game. Much more structure as a tower defense game.
Great music and has some mechanical complexity to it.

Updates keep coming; one improved base building by a TON so several convenience problems have been squashed.

Worth a buy.
