“Dark Is the Night” (Тёмная ночь) is a well-known Soviet song from the Great Patriotic War, first performed by Mark Bernes in the 1943 film Two Soldiers.
It was composed by Nikita Bogoslovsky with lyrics by Vladimir Agatov. Although Leonid Utyosov made an unauthorized early recording, Bernes’ version became the famous one, sung in the film as his character thinks of his wife and child at night.

Despite officials criticizing the song as overly sentimental, it became a wartime symbol for millions. Known for its gentle, longing tone, it revealed a personal side of soldiers’ lives, standing apart from the usual marching and patriotic songs of the era.
