VERY MINOR SPOILERS

I was one of the many people who played this game near it's launch date back in December 2020, and...

Well, let's just say that I didn't have many kind words back then.

To say the least, the game was HELLA buggy at launch, from small bugs, like cars randomly flying in the air, to literal game-breaking bugs, some to the point where it was impossible to finish the game to 100% completion. Now, because of these bugs, and several more bugs and just general issues, this game was berated by people online, even resulting in CDPR getting several class-action lawsuits, and even being the victims of a cyber-attack (how ironic).

But, that was (nearly) two years ago, and whilst I still think that the game has quite a bit to go before it turns into the game that fans were promised just a few short years ago, I think that the game is in a very playable state at the moment, and I strongly urge people to give the game a second try after its updates and patches.

Now, I don't want to dwell too much on the past, which is why in this review, I will be mainly be talking at length about how the game feels and plays today, after the latest patches.

Cyberpunk 2077: A Comprehensive Review

What I Like
First off, I LOVE the atmosphere and art-style of this game. It really does feel like a breath of fresh air compared to most other RPGs I've seen and played. Night City in general screams of a city that seems like the perfect paradise that most people would be looking for, when really, it hides a dark secret, that only residents of the city would know. Another thing I really like is that each district of the city has their own vibe, like with Japantown having virtual cherry blossoms and things traditional to Japanese culture, whilst the City Center has things for the rich, such as large buildings, and designer clothing stores. It's the small things like that which really sell the atmosphere of the game, which makes the city feel more immersive.

Gameplay is a big thing when it comes to games like this for me, which is why I am very pleasantly surprised to see that this game feels very nice to play, and has a lot of replayability. This is one of the biggest selling points of the game for me, the fact that it not only fun to play, but doesn't feel repetitive is one of the best things that a game can be.

Another thing that's feels good to mention is the amount of new features the game has gotten since release. Back in December 2020, the game felt basically empty, with V (the main character) only being able to own 1 apartment, and having very little decor in said apartment, aside from a plush toy you would get from signing up for a GOG.com account. This has changed drastically, with there being 4 new apartments that V can rent, and being able to decorate the original apartment, with new colors and moods. More new features include:

-Ability to customize appearance (hair, makeup, etc) in apartment mirror, and being able to customize more thoroughly (eye color, face geometry, ...genitals (yes, really.), etc) at ripperdocs.
-Transmog system (ability to customize and wear outfits without affecting armor)
-New quests
-Cross-progression saves
-Many improvements to vehicles, economy, and combat

And the last thing that I want to add on to this list of features I like in CP2077 is the modding capabilities. I think modding is a must when it comes to games like this, and seeing all of the mods available for this game really adds to the whole game in general. And thankfully, that will just continue to get even better, thanks to the recently announced REDmod modding tools, and I can't wait to see what modders will do with better access to official modding tools.

Whilst there are many things that I like about this game, and more that aren't listed here, there is one glaring issue...

The Big Issue

Trying not to get into too many details, I do really like the story of this game. It has the right amount of witty dialogue, scary settings, and feels. But, I feel like this game focuses too much on the main story, and too little on the other concepts of the universe. One of the first examples that comes to mind is right after Jackie's death, when Dexter shoots V in the head, and you suddenly wake up as Johnny Silverhand, on a mission to invade Arasaka, getting killed by Adam Smasher in the process. After this segment, we can see Johnny being interrogated by a few big names in the game, all occurring in an unknown room. What was that place? Was it some sort of afterlife? Do only people who are reserved as legends end up there? What even happened in between the player arriving in this space, and Johnny waking up in V's body? It's things like these that make me think about all the deeper parts of the game, and more so, how very little they're talked about. There are many more examples of this, especially in the context of cyberpsychos and how cyberpsychosis even works. These are not explained in the game, which could lead to new players who aren't familiar with the lore of the game being very confused. I know I was confused for a long time. This leads to the game not portraying the main issues of Night City very well.

Whilst this is a big issue for me, there is some hope...

A Silver(hand) Lining

CDPR have already said that they are committed to the Cyberpunk franchise, and will continue to build the story, whether that will be through updates, expansions, or straight-up sequels is still up in the air... well, except for the fact that there will be a full expansion for CP2077 coming out next year...

But, that's not the point. What I'm trying to say is that I hope that with the expansion, and whatever comes after, that the concepts of this game and the universe of Cyberpunk in general can be explained more thoroughly.

But thankfully, there is a way to get deeper into the story of Night City.

As of the writing of this review, there is a new original anime series titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners on Netflix, which explains some of the concepts of the universe, whilst also offering a great story to go along with it. I strongly urge anybody who wants to know more about the lore of Cyberpunk, or even anybody who wants more from Cyberpunk to watch the anime. as I believe it shows off both the best and worst parts of Night City better than the game could ever do.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ steam needs a better way to format reviews i spent a good 2 hours trying to format this whole ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing and still probably got some things wrong, fml

It's with games like these where I wish I could put a 'mixed' rating on the review. Whilst I did enjoy this game very much gameplay-wise, the story just didn't stick with me. It doesn't help that the final boss battle was literal hell, at least for me, and because of that, the ending didn't really feel that rewarding.

Overall: 6/10

This game is the most beautiful game I have ever played, not only in graphics, but in story-telling as well. One of the few games that have nearly brought me to tears...

Poor Arthur Morgan...
