Would be good to have a patch for Micro Comms Console as well as radio station from Fortifications: CItadel
5katz  [author] Sep 3, 2024 @ 5:25am
Havent tested in ages but since it such a simple patch operation there's next to no way it wont work unless Ludeon decides to rework the comms console
Crimson Sep 3, 2024 @ 3:13am
Sooo.. Does this still work for 1.5 or am I not the sharpest tool in the shed?
5katz  [author] Jul 2, 2024 @ 11:23am
It just uh... works.
Overfox May 30, 2024 @ 4:01am
The "Tweaks Galore" mod has a "chat on comms" recreation type, and is 1.5 compatible.
Shinoskay May 29, 2024 @ 11:46pm
the guran tree has a hidden unit inside the tree for things like birthing calculations... couldnt you use that and the 'animals are fun' concept to make it so the comms console has a quasi animal entity that is joyful?
Booperius May 12, 2024 @ 4:30pm
Hey, 5Katz, I bet with the stuff for Anomaly, you could push an optional patch that uses content from anomaly to make it function with Speakup and Interaction Bubbles now. Since the DLC added a way to basically have a hidden pawn on the map. In theory, whenever a pawn uses the console, it could blink in and out of existence.

1.5 update waiting room...

1.5?

I've worked with the maker of SpeakUp before, sadly it uses the basegame social interaction system, changes their text, and then displays the social log as speech bubble, giving the illusion of first person speech for colonists. This sadly doesnt solve the issue that on the comms console, there is no recipient pawn "getting" the interaction, thus no social log text to flavour, thus no speeck bubble. Easiest way really would be speech blubble graphics without text, rendered the same way the cards for poker or the "Broom" for cleaning are rendered, as "Motes" that would require me to find out how those work, and how to attach the trigger to draw speech bubble motes onto the comms console on interaction. as stated before, way out of scope for this mod, and way too much work to learn for just a little graphic plopping up and floating away

"If you can code it {to display random speech bubbles while on the comms} or know anyone who can feel free to hit me up any time"

I just discovered the SpeakUp and Interaction Bubbles mods. And it had me wondering: Shouldn't using these two mods make it possible to produce dialog bubbles for this mod, while colonists are chatting on the comms for joy withOUT a need for programming in C# to create a .DLL?

SpeakUp even has a Wiki: https://github.com/sergiodinapoli/SpeakUp/wiki
And it looks like it allows coding dialog speech bubbles using only mostly standard .XML code. :lunar2020playfuldog:

Tye-Wynd Jan 2, 2024 @ 4:05pm
I dont know if this is already a mod, but let pawns instigate a raid with a faction that has poor relations
Thundercraft Dec 14, 2023 @ 9:57pm
@Sylphienne
I agree! Though, instead of actual chat bubbles, I'd even be happy to see little emoji bubbles like we see in the modified "screenshot" above. (I was so disappointed to learn that those emoji bubbles were lies.:steamsad: :lunar2020sweatrat: )
But, the mod author explained that this is difficult to do and would require someone with more programming skills to make that happen.
Sylphienne Nov 29, 2023 @ 4:10am
Aw, i wish we could have a version where you do implement actual chat bubbles, relation/friendship building using comms console as you could invite those who you've met over comms and have built a relationship to join your colony.

Kinda like how in The Sims where you use the phone or computer to chat with people online and if you build a strong friendship, you could either invite to visit you or move in with you.

That would be so cool. :slimehappy:
Miha_metan Sep 25, 2023 @ 12:58pm
now pawns know how to install discord
Sumatris Jul 21, 2023 @ 4:56am
Yeah, it's extremely unlikely that I'll ever figure out how to do that ^^. Anyway, thanks for answering my question, and have a nice one :-).
5katz  [author] Jul 21, 2023 @ 3:40am
Ah, as in training social skill? Probably out of scope of this mod, though you should just be able to patch the social skill gain onto to the Radio talking job from biotech, getting the results you want
Sumatris Jul 21, 2023 @ 3:32am
They do. What I meant was the unfortunate lack of education from the Radio Talking activity. Since your mod already has this as an independent function, I wanted to know if it would be possible to also add it to the Biotech version.
5katz  [author] Jul 21, 2023 @ 3:00am
Comms chatting is a Biotech core feature for kids, this mod came out before biotech and enables the comms console as a recreation type. Kids should be able to do both with this mod, "comms chatting" from this mod and the biotech learning type, i believe its called "Radio talking"
Sumatris Jul 21, 2023 @ 1:04am
Biotech kids have chatting on comms as one of their desired learning types, but unlike the other ones it doesn't actually train anything. Would it be possible to extend the social training feature of this mod to the Biotech mechanic?

Not a wall.
zzzspina Apr 18, 2023 @ 9:42am
this is somethng that has always bugged me. space age. and the only time people talk is in person. this is a grate little addison to the game. but was hoping for like a 1x1 unit for a private phone in rooms.
5katz  [author] Mar 19, 2023 @ 4:27am
and for talking to other people on the comms, "long distance" lets you invite related pawns into your colony over comms, e.g the distant wife of a colonist can be invited over to live with you

If you're interested in a mod that triggers random events, then you may be interested in this:

Incident Flaregun
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2208722503

Sadly, that mod has not yet been updated for v1.4. Though, if you ever do feel up to making your own mod to trigger different events, perhaps you could study such mods to see how they work?

BTW: There's also the PrisonerRansom mod: When you demand a ransom for your prisoners, there's a chance that they don't accept and raid you, instead. Oh, and there are also mods like Better Random Incidents, Events+, Vanilla Events Expanded, and Sparkling Worlds Addon - More Events, which add new random events.
5katz  [author] Mar 18, 2023 @ 5:56pm
dont let your dreams be memes, XML is not too hard to learn and the rimworld discord always needs new modders! I'm just not that into modding myself, and it's no priority of mine, so you have to do it yourself or motivate someone else :)
Spicy air enjoyer Mar 18, 2023 @ 5:34pm
Some day... I hope you`ll be able to do a mod that will allow to chat with random dudes from different factions and trigger different events
5katz  [author] Feb 17, 2023 @ 11:23am
Happy to hear that my simple old mod still enhances peoples experiences in the game, fun storytelling and many fun colonies to you!
enigman Feb 17, 2023 @ 10:19am
@5katz Many thanks for the explanation. Been a year or so since I last played Rimworld and I loved seeing my colonists 'chatting' with your mod. I haven't got to comms level technology in recent playthroughs so I thought that I would check.
5katz  [author] Feb 16, 2023 @ 2:45pm
1: In biotech there is already a learning type called Radio talking, in which children use the comms console to get learning points
2: since children seek for recreation the same as adults, children will BOTH radio talk and chat on comms seperately, one to learn, and one for fun like your other colonists
enigman Feb 16, 2023 @ 2:27pm
With Biotech in the mix do children chat on the comms? If so, is it possible to include it as a 'learning' activity?
brady Feb 15, 2023 @ 10:18pm
Every time I see one of my pawns chatting on the Comm station I smile. Thanks!

@5katz Just wondering if you are still working on updating this?

Cheers

Mod seems to work fine in 1.4! No issues from me so far!
MiguelCairo Oct 22, 2022 @ 3:01pm
haha fair enough, hope you're well :)
5katz  [author] Oct 22, 2022 @ 2:58pm
Possible certainly
MiguelCairo Oct 22, 2022 @ 2:53pm
1.4 possible?
Delta7777777 Aug 12, 2022 @ 1:11am
I already love the concept of this mod, and the minimalistic filesize and coding are very appealing as well.
I'm surprised this feature isn't in the base game.
Thanks for making this, 5katz.
5katz  [author] Jul 6, 2022 @ 8:54am
Answered the same question before; this mod hangs onto the Vanilla comms console itself as the "joy object" to interact with, if you make a copy of the patch this uses and change the reference from the vanilla console to whatever one you want it to work with, you should be able to patch any modded one with a single line of XML editing :)
Ander5187 Jul 6, 2022 @ 8:31am
Does this mod work with other mods' comms consoles?
GVLT May 5, 2022 @ 3:16am
Great idea. but it seems like pawns are able to chat even with unpowered console.
tekkit Apr 9, 2022 @ 11:14am
That's alright, still a high quality mod!
5katz  [author] Apr 9, 2022 @ 1:45am
Looked into that already, speakup handles displaying what happened in pawn interactions, so i'd have to find a way to simulate a second off-map pawn to talk to to display any text, or as my first idea was make a mote texture like the cards used in poker, sadly both of this to my knowledge requires C# to be done, and i don't have a clue how that works. Still thanks for trying to help make it possible, if i ever do get into actual higher-quality modding i'll try to get speech bubbles to work on this :)
tekkit Apr 8, 2022 @ 6:14pm
Maybe instead of coding the speech bubbles from scratch, you could instead use the SpeakUp! mod as a framework for them?
