After I completed this mod I checked walkthrough on youtube and figured that in 7 and 10 levels my personal solutions were odd, that gave me a little bit of hadache while playing, but that's my problem I guess.
Not a fan of 11 & 12 levels due to solution mechanics.
8, 9 and 13 were nice, I liked the last one as well, although people tend to dislike 14 due to timing mechanics and stuff, but timing is not a big problem if you do everything right, trust me.
Overall i would say this mod is 7/10, great work ABNTGeneric.
On another note, there were a few bugs here and there, but nothing that interfered with the gameplay. I still had a great time!
Oh, and the song at the end was pretty neat! The soundtrack in general was cool, mind you.
I was bummed when it was all over, I was hoping it would go a bit longer! Hah, well, it'll be worth the wait. Thanks for making something so awesome!
:D
I'm begging you to listen to what the community says and to do it better next time. Please understand that Portal is a PUZZLE game, NOT a game of SKILL...
When it's bad, it's bad, but when it's good, it's amazing.
However, it does have the story going for it...
It's worth a try. Just make sure you have a "get out of jail" noclip bind, as this series can get fairly annoying at times.
This series really does a good job at making timing puzzles, but unfortunately thats the problem: It's all timing. I had to stare at puzzles for hours until I realised it was some stupid timing or some puzzle that required luck. The High Energy Pellets are certainly nice to see, but the way they were incorperated didn't feel right. The only thing keeping this mod from it being a 1/5 is the visuals and voice acting, even the storyline felt a bit odd to say the least. I just really don't enjoy this map series at all.
The pros stops at maps design and custom music/voice acting. Ok for the Hammer editing skills, but that's far from enough to make good maps and puzzles.
I stopped playing at map 6. They are all the same, frustrating timed based "puzzles". The one that need random bounce to be solved (number 4 if i remember correctly) is very bad.
I really suggest making super easy puzzles instead of stuff like this.
This collection gets a lot of attention because of Hammer, but it's vastly overrated. Have no idea why mediocre maps like this are getting PC Gamer's attention and so many far better maps on workshop are ignored...
Sorry, nothing personal, but this kind of unfair things makes me angry.
idk how mods work
What the author seemed to miss is what made Portal 2 such a good game: it made you feel clever. Timing puzzles and doing the same thing over and over to get it just right after you know how the puzzle works are just frustrating.
I rated those I liked with a thumbs up and those that i hated down. I won't rate the pack as it is quite obvious how much effort went into it and I don't want to weigh down the scales on any side.
I hope you keep on making maps and I hope you take people's criticism by heart for after hours 2.
Also I liked your voice acting and the story!
there hasn't been any good maps during 2018 so,it will top all the those.
but comparing to past hammer maps , it needs a little work.
I like to think I'm very competent at solving difficult puzzles, but the frustration of trying to solve an unconventional puzzle eventually wore out my patience, and I just started skipping levels/using cheats just to progress.
It's one thing to solve a frustratingly difficult puzzle, it's another thing to solve a frustratingly difficult puzzle only to realise there's 20 more difficult puzzles waiting to be solved.
In short, my experience of "After Hours Episode 1" doesn't give me high hopes for "Episode 2".

P.S. General Portal 2 map-making rule of thumb: NEVER use grey textures (e.g. cinderblocks) for portalable surfaces.
The story was very vague. For example, they expect you to know what the test elements are and what they do. As someone that already played both Portal games, this makes sense, but not in the story.
Overall, I think that this first episode should be reworked so that there are actual good puzzles that people can enjoy.
Definately NOT for the portal rookies out there. I got as far as map 1-10.
I had one problem with the map 1-4-Spike, the last test before the exit gave me a VERY low fps issue. other than that, the maps were fine.
Great maps though!
a) This is an execution-based series of maps. Puzzles are conceptually simple, rare.
b) Levels range from underlit to extended pitch black sections. Some flickering.
Nice things:
-Music and voiceover are pleasant.
-The restrained architectural sensibility.
-A couple of newish elemens.
Not so nice things:
-New elements aren't as frequent as you'd expect, nor are their implications fully explored. The orange one does not work as expected in the presence of multiple objects, which is where it's used. They lack signage, which works due to low element count.
-The texturing and lighting are both incomplete and hard to parse.
-Voiceover implies story, and there really isn't one.
-The mod trolls you a few too many times.
Personally, the combination of finickiness, darkness and time pressure meant I had a miserable time.
To put it simply, the levels are clunky and unconventional. Half the time I'm not even sure if the answer to the puzzle was the ACTUAL answer. There's a lot of waiting and timing, which isn't fun.
One of my biggest problems with this...is the energy balls. I can see why they were removed in the base game. They're slow, inconsistant, hard to grasp in concept, on and on...I enjoyed the levels that DIDN'T have these energy balls, cause then you didn't have to wait or properly time things. (Well, that second one isn't true, there's still of lot of timing in the puzzles) When you mess up with the energy balls, you have to restart pretty much the entire puzzle, and it's really easy to mess up with those things.
While they were simple in the first game, that's cause it wasn't used in a "clever" or convaluded way.
Overall, I ended up getting more anger then fun from this. (I gave up on 1-7...)
(P.S. Uncle Dane posted it on twitter which is why I looked into this)
You should change this to "beginning of 2019" since it is misleading, don't you think? :-)
* Unclear story (we'll know it later, right? it is just beginning)
* Amazing voice acting
* Great cutscene at the end
* Almost completely bts areas
* Weired (for me) level design: generally one-trick things, even complicated PS: Mel was easier for me
My scores: 7.5/10 — good that there is new stuff, but I personally like THE LONE FUTURE STARTER, Cosmogony and, of course, Portal Stories: Mel a bit more. However, you should try this to get is this chamber style OK for you. If not, skip boring parts and watch story.
P.S.: I'd like to watch a movie based on this mod :).
