It's actually an enjoyable game, story is cliche but with an interesting protagonist and some unique gameplay using the personas, however... Please note this title will not be accessible following September 1st, 2022

This is not how you keep a customer, Ubisoft.

Edit: So they removed the note about the title being inaccessible, which is good. They made a point to clarify that people will still be able to download and play the game they paid for.

They say it was just a 'misunderstanding' ... but this is the company that repeatedly posted 'bullshots' of watch_dogs, AC Unity, Far Cry 5, & the Division. Tested the waters with NFTs in Breakpoint and when that didn't go over well ended all support for the game a few months later. Not to mention all the issues with abusive management they said they would address and then never did.

I'm sure that kid who kept crying wolf as a prank considered it a 'misunderstanding' when he was getting chewed to bits and nobody came to help him either. Food for thought, dinner for the wolves.

Early Access Review
It's like they asked what I would want to see in a Puzzle Quest sequel and did the exact opposite of that. The "Puzzle" gem-matching gameplay is the only positive aspect of this game. The "Quest" side is terrible, the NPCs and missions are boring, there's no real world to explore...

It's just mobile multi-currency microtransaction lootbox time-gated grindy uninteresting generic trash wearing the skin of it's better predecessors.

Perhaps the best VR Zombie survival game, looking forward to the sequel.

It is not without flaws: The human AI is pretty bad at times, the climbing is wonky, the notebook UI is cumbersome to navigate and scroll, decorations in your home base can get displaced when you reload, and I ran into a bug where using blunt weapons like frying pans or pistol whips would crash the game.

However, the core gameplay loop of scavenging, braining zeds, and coming home to recycle and craft is pretty enjoyable, and the story and quests are decent. There's enough variety in the enemy types to encourage switching between stabbing, shooting, and stealth. There are little nods and references to TWD comics and shows, and the visual style is somewhat reminiscent of the Telltale games. You can turn off the HUD and enable your microphone so the enemies can hear you if you're going for the full immersion effect.

If you ever wanted to rub zombie guts on yourself so you could freely navigate the herd with your backpack full of severed heads, you might enjoy this game.

Simply put, it's the best reason to get a VR gaming system. Most other VR games are glorified tech demos, flawed ports, fun but repetitive, or just way too short. Alyx is a glimpse of what the future might hold for VR gaming once there's enough interest and budget to really focus on it.

I might have some bias since I've played the HL2 games, but the environments, music, and sound really do bring you right back to that world, and the storytelling is excellent once again. The pace is a bit slower, the combat is tactical but still gets hectic, and just about every area is packed with detail that rewards exploration.

The gameplay makes good use of the VR platform too, with simple inventory and weapon controls, environmental puzzles, and of course the gloves. I know this game will go flat one day, but everyone should at least experience the sheer joy of yoinking and yeeting vodka bottles in VR, the satisfaction of jabbing yourself with the med shot, and the thrill of dodging a leaping headcrab. And now people are making new mods that are pretty impressive too.

If you already have VR, you should play Alyx. There's a small handful of other top-notch and niche VR games, but it's still hard to advise anyone to spend a small fortune on VR if you're gaming on a budget. On the other hand, if you're a Half-Life fan who is on fence about VR, it might be worth looking in to your options. Hopefully Valve has set a trend here for others to emulate.

Early Access Review
I usually stay away from Early Access games, but this is one I'm glad I picked up.

It's a bit like an open world Slay the Spire with tactical party-based combat. I especially like the worldbuilding lore and storybook motif that represents the User Interface. The character classes are another aspect I think they've done in a neat way that encourages replaying them in different combinations. It isn't perfect (I'd like to see a lot more quests and story events), but it has a lot of potential, and they update it frequently with new features and balance changes based on feedback. Keep an eye on this one, and if you really enjoy deckbuilding synergies there's quite a bit of fun - and a little frustration - to be had.

Master Class in pretty much every aspect. The combat, the writing & acting, the music & art, the progression & replayability... it's difficult to find anything not to love about this game. Really gets its hooks in with 'just one more run' gameplay. Highly recommended.

I wandered through the remains of a once-great American city, the streets now filled with garbage, broken glass, and the husks of burned out cars. I used a bobby pin and a screwdriver to pop the lock on a shed, where I found enough scrap metal to craft into a makeshift pipe gun. At an abandoned gas station with the door ripped off the hinges, I found a hidden cooler with a carton of cigarettes, some water, and a bottle of cola, which I traded to another scavenger for some ammunition. I fought off a couple of raiders, one wearing a gas mask, the other muttering to herself about taking too many chems.

Then I went home and played Fallout 4. At least in the game, it isn't raining.

It's a bit of a time-waster, if you're in to that sort of thing. They advertise it as being about space ninjas, but it's more like fashion model acrobat-wizards with guns.

It really should have been so much better than it turned out. There was supposed to be a talent-laden team producing this, and instead it ended up like some amateur first-try programming project. After most of the major patches it's playable, but it's still boring and soulless.
