New review:
The recent update which aligns the game with the mobile version has me changing the review from negative to positive. They’ve added a season which aligns to the tv show which has been pretty fun. The game still feels, at times, a little slow and boring, but it’s nice to see the game having regular updates and events.

Old review:
Ill start by saying I actually like this game but will give it a bad review for two reasons.

Firstly, the steam experience of this game is wildly different from the mobile versions. On mobile, you can be part of seasonal events and rewards. On steam, it just doesnt exist.

Secondly, if youve ever played fallout shelter online, you realize theres so much more potential in a fallout branded mobile game thats not being realized. The SE Asian online version is packed full of fun stuff to do. In comparison, Fallout shelter is slow and sort of boring. Its easy to master and gives you no real reason to maintain what youve built.

In general, I enjoy the basic mechanics of the game and the management part of things, but there is a ton left to be desired.

Having been one of those people who played the OG game when it first came out, I can say with certainty that this game lives up to the original game. The story keeps you engaged, the live battle system is better than I thought it would be, and the world, including the characters, are stunning.

The only drawback is the battles can be a bit boring and simplistic. There are times where I was relying on blocking just to boost my ATB simply to heal, waiting out a limit to do any real damage to the enemy.

I also was hoping and half expected a bit more of an open world. I imagine well see that in the next installments.

With all the turmoil with game companies creating flawed games, buying game companies out, greed, micro transactions, NFT, etc etc, its nice to have a game that is simply a game. No hidden fine print. Its just a good game.

As far as the game play, it feels balanced and well done. Its exciting and a blast of excitement. I love plowing through the enemy and collecting tons of awards as I do. I call this a game version of a cup of coffee. Shocks my brain back to life.

I have been playing battlefield since 1942, but Battlefield 2 very heavy back in the day (part of a clan, clan tournaments, server raids etc).

2042 simply put is the foundation of a great battlefield game, but as is is quite predictable and boring. I like the hero system but knowing who is who on the battlefield and what they can do for you is tough. I don't like how everyone can revive. I often played a support role and took pride in sacrificing my abilities to revive and heal. As a support player, I also like the lack of focus on K/D ratio. Battlefield is not, and never was a COD type game. The goal was not the individual but the team winning. No-scoping isn't as impressive as a well greased squad capping a flag with ease.

If I could give the game a mixed review, id prefer that. I believe Dice will listen to the community but also stay the course with its vision.

Ill spare a detailed review. The best thing to do is play this with an open mind and find your own end game. The story isnt going to be rich. The game will have its bugs. You may even be banned like me for a mistake Bethesda made (and they apologized and reinstated my game). But there are some fun hills to climb. You have to be tougher playing the game than you do to survive the wasteland.

I sit here trying to write a review about a game that I know little about as my children annoyingly play in the background. I realize as their sounds pierce my skull and cause sharp pains in my forehead that this game has been in development longer than they have. My kids have developed from 0 to this in a shorter time.

Its clear a game company cant hold up against nature, but this idea is my conduit to an idea; despite the many things I love about this game, I feel robbed of a total experience that 9 years and all the hype should bring.

Ill start with what makes an RPG what it is. The story (so far) is impeccably nice. I feel sucked into the story and cant wait to know more. The many names locations and other things thrown at you can be quite confusing. Every place I drive through warrants a phone call with a slew of propositions including jobs and used car salesmen. Its hard to decide whats important and what can wait. When you start to unpack the story, you start to love it even more.

The mechanics are great as well. I want to complain that GTA V feels like a more mechanically dynamic universe but I check myself when I remember the combat experience in Cyberpunk is miles better than most FPSs let alone GTA. I feel like you can get the open world driving experience of GTA with an amazing ground level FPS shooter.

The character customization and growth has a steep learning curve but once you get the hang of it, you realize its potential. As you level, you start to think about character build. Your character becomes uniquely yours as you navigate whats important to you.

The open world at first feels rich and open but it becomes clear pretty fast that most of the world is inaccessible and rehashed from other zones. Random encounters are all pretty similar. Textures and the likes are repetitive and predictable. 90% of the world is closed off and locked. When you do find a location you can explore its exciting but becomes less so fast.

A lot of conversation seems to revolve around performance issues on older PCs and old gen consoles. My experience on my mid grade PC and using Geforce now has been pretty good. The biggest issue ive encountered has been rendering issues. Cars and people being blocked out before becoming fully clear. This is not an issue when running on Geforce Now.

The setting of the game exist in the future and it seems the game itself was made with the future in mind. Its hard to imagine this game running decently on older PCs and consoles. The game also feels like a great framework for content to come. A sandbox for the developers to add more content. For now, the sandbox has some nice sand castles but as you play, they start to crumble slightly.

Overall I'm deeply enjoying the game. The story sucks me in. If your system can handle it, and you consider yourself a patient person, give it a try.

A perfect demonstration of what a VR game should be. Compelling story, simple but exciting mechanics, and a great extension to an amazing series long overdue for a new title.
