Early Access Review
The most accurate attempt at a Paragon remake so far. Feels well polished and has that similar moba feel where it can be super fun or make you want to eat your hands
9/10 give Countess a bbl

Short review after 6 hours of gameplay

Pros
- Great art
- Self aware dialogue that gave me a few chuckles
- Challenging, a bit too much at times, but it almost feels right
- Unique movesets

Cons
- Animations are fast but feel too fast at times which made it hard for me to grasp what was happening until I got used to it. I feel like a better battle log system would help with this especially because many moves have second abilities to them other than just damage. There is sort of a battle log system in the bottom left but it goes by way too fast to even read what is happening. I'll put this in here too but determining type advantages was pure trial and error which was a bit annoying if you're too used to Pokemon and I feel like a more advanced log system would help new players figure things out quicker.
- Nexomon in the world scale rather than being a set range for the entire game (just an opinion and I recommend new players experience it first hand before judging off this review)
- Stamina < Power Points

My first hour was great. I was really into the art style, the music was catchy and relaxing, and the world/story felt new and interesting. I wanted to keep playing to discover more Nexomons and progress the story, so I did. Six hours later I'm finding myself kind of frustrated yet not at the same time. I think all of my years playing Pokemon have spoiled this "monster/pet battling" genre for me so this game felt like a chore to keep playing but I was also enjoying myself. It really is a huge leap in difficult from the hand holding recent Pokemon games give you. My biggest complaint is the leveling system.

Slight spoilers
Just some things that annoyed me

I progressed to the 2nd major fight using the same 2-3 Nexomons while switching them around to keep them at similar levels. This is similar to how I would approach Pokemon. Once I got to into the fight, I immediately felt useless and I barely won after spamming potions and ethers. Even lesser battles up to this point felt super difficult and, at times, unwinnable but I prevailed to the major fight. It felt like I was severely underleveled even though my levels matched (+1/-1) those of the opposition.
I backtracked a bit to derail from the main story and catch some new Nexomon with different types to get some diversity in my team and see some new faces. However, was met with the tedious challenge of grinding any Nexomon that I caught to a similar level so it could compete. This game has world scaling levels. All wild Nexomon scale up as you progress. Grinding any new Nexomon you catch to a similar level of your main party absolutely sucked. I was barely winning 1v1s with my new Nexomon against wild Nexomons with type disadvantage at similar levels. I would fight 1 wild Nexomon, have to either backtrack and heal at a camp or use the potions I was saving for important battles, and repeat the process. Switch training doesn't really work in this game either as I rarely OHKO wild Nexomons and the experience gain from splitting is so very small. I enjoy this game's uniqueness especially after wishing Pokemon would evolve it's core for once but I personally feel that world scaling is the wrong approach.

The only reason to buy this game is to hear Patrick say he doesn't speak Italian 15 times. 11/10 just as good as the original with the remastered visuals.

I originally played this game near 10 years ago on Xbox 360 as a kid and was hardly able to understand the story and most aspects. I would just skip through the cutscenes and spam through the decision dialogue just to get back to the combat because that is what I mostly enjoyed back then. Years later I saw this on sale and thought I'd pick it up and now I feel more invested in the story and gameplay than ever. I never did complete the game years ago or even start the DLC as I had gotten stuck in the Fade (players will know what I mean) and gave up. It's not perfect, it's not 10/10, but there are certain quirks about this game that make it so nostalgic for me. Later releases of the series just haven't given me the same enjoyment as this one.
