👁Overview👁

Let yourself go into your subconscious to discover your history but also your deepest nightmares.

Dreamscaper is an A-RPG/Roguelite developed by Afterburner Studios, a team composed of 3 developers and 1 composer.

You will soon realize that the A-RPG/Roguelite genres are only part of the iceberg because the game also mixes several genres such as hack&slash, dungeon crawler and many others to make the experience more intense.

📖History📖

The story plunges us (literally) into the life and dreams of Cassandra Cassidy, a young woman with an unknown but painful past. You will travel through her subconscious through a cloud of partial memories, darkened by nightmares.
Cassidy's tormented dreams and conversations in reality will reveal her story, her fears, but also her strength as she will have to face them to find her light, her happiness. The relationships you will build by talking with the different characters will help Cassidy to become stronger and make peace with her past to defeat her old demons.

📺Graphics/Art Direction📺

Developed under Unreal Engine 4, Dreamscaper proves that passion and creativity allow us to transcribe the emotions and poetry of a moment through scenes/environments by focusing only on the essential.

The lighting effects, the colours, the elements of the scenery are all there for a good reason and with a hidden meaning that can be interpreted in many different ways.
The erased edges represent partial memories while the mist represents the veil of a dream that is difficult to remember for example. Each element is a source of poetry and will give free rein to your imagination.

The development team used only one texture (which they of course modified) to save time and focus on the modeling, light, and layout. This is the gesture that I think best illustrates the fact that they really looked at the atmosphere and what it conveys to the player. If you want more info the interview is here on internet.

🎧Soundtrack🎧

In Cassidy's room we hear a very soft/restful tune dominated by the piano, sublimated by a violin (maybe double basses) followed by some rare percussion and some guitar notes (if I'm not mistaken).

During the fights in the world of dreams the music accelerates and gives way to a more epic rhythm with much more pronounced percussions accompanied by the violin and synthetic effects but there are other instruments such as the electric guitar for example.

When you enter a boss's room the music fades away until you can't hear it anymore to let you enjoy the noise of the environment before the big fight. During the big fight the percussions and violins lead the dance with a deep voice (a bit like a religious song) with many other melodic subtleties.

The sound environment is also very well worked out, including interaction sounds, footsteps in the snow, flowing water and so many others...

🎮Gameplay🎮

There are two main gameplay phases.

Waking phase

During the waking phase you're living Cassidy's life in reality. Here you can interact with those around you to befriend each other through various conversations that will teach you more about her story.

The bedroom will serve as the main hub of your adventure, allowing you to sleep, consult the crafting notebook and go to other places.

You'll have access to 3 chat rooms outside your room. Each trip to a location will consume time and conversations as well. This time corresponds to the time in game and you'll need to be home at 9pm to sleep so manage your time well as it's precious.

The different people you'll be talking to have a friendship level bar that you'll need to fill in to unlock various contents in the dream world and clear up Cassidy's past. To fill this bar you will simply need to chat with them and/or offer them gifts (which you can make from the items you collected in your dreams) that are more effective if they match their taste.

This is an important phase because it will allow you to unlock weapons, active/passive skills and other things.

Sleepy phase

During the sleep phase you are at the center of Cassidy's dreams/nightmares. You must walk through the different rooms, each of which represents one of your memories or one of your fears. This phase allows you to retrieve various items that you can use to make gifts to improve your relationships during the waking phase.

Here is a list of the rooms you may encounter:

  • Room full of enemies indicated by two crossed swords on the map.
  • Trading room where you can exchange a certain number of arrows for bombs for example.
  • Trading room where you can buy various items/weapons with the hourglasses you collect (game currency)
  • Treasure/Power room where you can choose an item/power from 1/2/3 available
  • Puzzle room where you have to solve a puzzle to make a reward appear.
  • Room with enemy and destructible structure with your weapon or bombs (they give hourglasses)
  • Boss's room

The goal will be to successfully pass these rooms to increase your equipment and thus be ready for the fight against the boss. Once the boss has been defeated you can move to a higher floor that corresponds to another place/time in Cassidy's life and so on. If you die in your dream, then you wake up and start a new run.

Contents of Dreamscaper: Prologue

I would like to remind you that the prologue version is the free version that allows you to discover a tiny part of the final game that will be released in early access this summer. The supporter edition is an upgrade of the prologue and serves to help the developers financially while providing you with bonus content.

The following list contains only the number of unlockable items and does not represent the actual number of items already in the game. There's a lot more than what I'm quoting.

According to the developer the supporter upgrade adds exactly at the object level:

"there are 52 new items in the Supporter's Edition, and 16 of them are locked behind new relationship levels."

Qualities and defects

Positive points

- Sublime and poetic DA
- Beautiful and intoxicating soundtrack
- Immersive and impeccable writing quality
- Original and mastered concept
- Enjoyable gameplay and a feeling of real progress

Negative points

- Slight lack of combo variety for my taste
