Looking for good race mods (1.3)
Does anyone know of any good race mods for 1.3? I'm having a hard time finding original content that isn't filled to the brim with space furries (kill it with fire), anime-like, fantasy or copied from existing literature/movies. 10 pages into the workshop and all I see are talking jellyfish heads or big boobied snake women. There's gotta be some hidden gems out there that fit the vanilla vibe (or something at least plausible) that you guys know about.

I'm already using a couple race mods:
Rimsenal is pretty great. I'm not super into the Korean gundam-esque equipment, but the pros definitely outweigh the negatives, especially because the factions feel diverse enough and offer plenty of threats. Xenohumans seems okay, it's a little out there, but it's the only mod I have that actually adds racial variety. I want to use Android tiers , but I haven't been able to get it to work bug-free since pre-1.0.

So, what are you guys using? Am I doomed to a human-only RimWorld existence?

Thanks for the suggestions, but those are excellent examples of race mods I'm currently trying to avoid.

What specifically are you looking for? You only said no furries, no anime, and no movie/book. Which none of those I listed are.

Kijin 2.0 is good to add a couple more story tellers.
Androids tiers works with 1.3 and with the androids mod installed.
Might look at pawnmorpher. Does add in races, but mutation things that change characters.
There really aren't a lot of vanilla style ones. Might look for things specific to a style of fighting or culture. IE Spartans, samurai, etc.
Edit: also, if you don't have it, get the mod organizer. It will help with finding dependencies for mods not working.

@Stariali "Furry" refers to anthropomorphic animal people, which seems like 80% or more of the current race mods. I might look at your "Ancient" suggestions, even though they look a bit overpowered, but they're Combat Extended compatible which is a big plus.

@arti-llery Kijin 2.0 kind of fits into the furry / anime categories for me.

I should emphasize that immersion is pretty important to me, I'm just trying to squeeze a little bit of variety into my game without things getting too out of control or mod bloated. I don't necessarily mind robots/androids or things truely alien, because I feel like they kind of scratch that Weyland-Yutani itch. All the Fox people or plant-like people don't really do it for me.

So you don't want any 'cutesy' stuff. I can relate. Unfortunately, it's very rare that there are vanilla-friendly 'alien' races that don't look like humans themselves.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1728999127 Forsakens are good, though last time I used them I thought they were a tad unbalanced, but that was a long time ago and I'm nitpicky.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1571323744 Crystalloids are pretty well developed and have similar functionality to the Royalty faction, including their own psycasts, probably my favorite faction mod.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2012718526 Drow are a decent light-weight option, don't stand out too much with anything crazy but still add some flavor.

Oh, if you like Rimsenal. Maybe try other faction mods like:

The Vanilla Factions Expanded mods. A Rimworld of Magic also adds in a magical faction that kind of kicks butt. Again, these are faction mods not alien races.

Faction mods are welcome, even if they do not directly add races, especially if the faction is very well thought out and fills a unique niche that isn't already represented in game or with a similar mod.

I basically posted the question, hoping someone out there knows where the good stuff is at. The workshop is getting filled up with with so much stuff lately; abandoned mods, forked mods, resurrected mods, compatibility patches, etc that it's getting difficult to search through all of it.

In a general sense the Vanilla Expanded stuff is pretty good, but I don't understand why they put so much effort into trying to make RimWorld into an Earth clone. We're stranded on the edge of the known galaxy/universe and the first thing you'll probably see when you exit your escape pods are squirrels... what?

I wish there were more mods that touched on or fleshed out some of RimWorld's already existing content/lore like Sparkling Worlds. I feel like there's an opportunity there with all the world types included in the base game. This Document[docs.google.com] covers them all and I even see races from the Xenohuman mod in there... I guess that was cut content?

Oh, man, I forgot the lore primer existed. I'm going to take a look at that and feel nostalgic. Sparkling Worlds was fun until I was traumatized by an infected ship parts event and my map was swarmed with insects :'C
whatamidoing Aug 21, 2021 @ 7:22pm
I mean, the lore primer says furries and anime are canon.
Heretic Aug 21, 2021 @ 7:26pm
I fell for that, thanks.
whatamidoing Aug 21, 2021 @ 7:29pm
Really, it does.
Fashion genes: Fashion-driven genetic modifications are often applied during later life instead of prenatally, and are most often cosmetic and skin-deep. Variations in hair and skin color are common. More exotic modification add shining crests, color-changing skin and eyes, reshaped or elongated bodies, and colored nails, feathers, or fur.
Furries are just short of explicitly mentioned, and I don't see any reason anime wouldn't be possible.

When you're right, you're right. You basically just obligated me to install ALL the race mods and start up a purist colony that has a KOS policy on furry types.
