How do I recover a save?
I had a save file, okay? Well? I decided to start a new game. The game decides to laugh in my face, and as soon as I leave Doc Mitchell's house, it saves over my save file. If ANYONE knows how to recover that save file, I would appreciate it A TON (very important save, I spent a TON of time on this saved game. A TON of time.)

If it's been written over, the save is gone. There's nothing to recover.

... well, that's 6-12 hours of gameplay lost...

Was it a manual save or an auto save?

Geez, is that all? I've had some games last as long as 100+ hours, you were just starting out anyway. Next time you might want to consider making a manual save, those won't get overwritten.

If you never manually saved the game and only let the autosave feature save then that prior save file is gone as soon as you continued with the new game.
If you actually manually saved and the game overwritten that save slot on its own, well then that is one messed up glitch.

it was a manual save. For some reason, it automatically overwrote it when I got out of Doc Mitchell's house. However, I'll just continue from my last manual save, about 6-12 hours prior to that one.

Hey...hey...no need to cry about that, always remember to make your own save file or backup them separetely in another folder,or e-mail or store on a flashdrive. Also don't stick with quicksave and autosaves, these type of local saves are always being override when get a new auto save or when you tap too fast your quicksave button.

well, as I said it was a manual save. Either I accidentally overwrote it myself, or it automatically saved over it... either way, I decided to restart from my previous save before that one, lol. Good thing I didn't have to completely restart from the beginning, I was level 35... O_o

Manual saves cannot be overwritten by the game's autosave feature. Not even by CASM. You probably accidentally overwritten it, or Steam Cloud lost the save and this is why you cannot see it.

well four years later but maybe still useful for someone

yes there is a way to recover, and it's quite simple...
inside the folder Where are your saves,, you will notice that there are two autosaves and two quicksaves with the following names : Autosave.fos and : Autosave.fos.bak......
This one : Autosave.fos.bak . . is no longer functional, but it still exists in your folder, it *corresponds to the penultimate time* you hit F5 in the case of quicksave ...this is what you need to recover ,, to make it work again you need to rename it to Autosave.fos........it's the same with the autosave...

*** example suppose you hit F5 giving a quicksave at 10am, and when it was 1pm you hit F5 again .... this 10am is still safe ..***
Autosave is a little harder to recover because all the time we are going through doors ..... I believe you can understand......... Sorry my english is not so good

Sorry for necro but, YOU ARE A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SAINT MAN. Damn dude, glanced over your post just before hitting delete. You saved +80 hours of gameplay, and I probably wouldn't stand re-playing it anyways. Haven't felt this good in a while, thanks.

man necro you're such a saint, you just saved me 30 hours of gameplay, I started just placing dynamite in some in one than another important figure and when I was gonna hit f9 i hit f5 and I suffer a panic attack

Why on earth would you have only a single save? And an autosave at that? FWIW, 12 hours is nothing. Probably not even to Boulder at that point. You can run that back on a new toon in a couple hours after you know what to expect.

Anyone playing these days should be using a save mod of some kind anyway - the vanilla save system is bollocks.

Most optimal solution in [current year] is Stewie's Tweaks. Older mods like Better Saves or CASM technically still work, but Stewie's is unquestionably the way to go.

You should've made a hard save instead of just using the auto save., especially for a game that uses the buggy Bethsuda engine that is known for being buggy with auto and quick saves especially when modded.
