A year later they added what was missing. Good game. Crafting system works. nice weapon selection (weapons have been re-balanced into working nicely) some were added, Talent tree is pretty good too. bugs are at a minimum and animations work well. Skins are still lame for weapons but the player cosmetics are a tiny bit better then they used to be (not really) IMO.

Old review at launch:

I've played 1000 hours of vermintide and 978 hours of vermintide 2 and after 1/10 of the time spend in these I already feel like there's no point playing darktide anymore. If you are new to the genre and didn't play the vermintide games you'll probably like this entry into the tide series, but right now it's very unlikely.

Bugs:

The biggest issues are the bugs which will eventually be fixed in about a year or so (which is the time it took for both vermintide games to be truly functional). Right now the biggest issue for you if you're not the lucky person to get constant crashes will be hit registration not working at all: In an average game you'll get dozens of hits on enemies that simply do not register. Enemy animations are bugged: the most obvious one being the hound and his hitbox. Some days they work and most of the time, I will dodge to see the hounds side ribs passing by my face and then be transported back in time and be trapped under the dog. There are more but these 3 are the more annoying ones that disrupt your ability to even experience the ¨amazing gameplay¨

In terms of quality Darktide is incredibly disappointing, For fairness purposes I will be comparing darktide to vermintide 1 since they could more easily build from vermintide 1 to make vermintide 2.

Maps:

In darktide there are less maps than in Vermintide 1. This is made worse with how the map design philosophy changed. Now we have zones, That reuse the same assets meaning that while you are technically doing a different mission you are in fact running in reused corridors, reused main areas, reused battle arenas, reused maps that you need to go backwards now. Point being at no time do you feel like you are doing anything different than the previous mission. it just feels like you're walking in the same place with slightly different rooms.

Weapons:

The weapons are worse IMO. We are told we have dozens of weapons but the different ¨Marks¨
of weapons as they call it are simply a question of the gun you hold using automatic, semi auto or manual with the actual damage output either being the exact same or the difference being so minimal it makes no difference using one or the other of a certain mark. Apparently selective fire is a lost technology of the 21 first century in 40k. but like that we have over 70+ weapons in our arsenal which are not all in the game yet. In vermintide 1 the difference between weapons was a lot more noticeable having access to single light weapons like a short sword or a war-hammer and heavy weapons like a zweihander or 2h axe and then the combination of dual swords, sword and dagger, dual dagger etc. once you had that weapon you could then find a copy of that weapon with a different skin for your own pleasure. Now in Darktide you have access to a grand total of 2 skins which are a slightly different model (fair enough for guns) that are repainted to 2 different paint jobs which are the same for all weapons across the board. That's all. Melee weapons are fine but are the same for all classes except ogryn and some small exceptions here and there but then we didn't have many guns in vermintide 1 either. it felt like more because they were all different and not shared but still.

Classes:

In vermintide we had classes based on weapons we could use which made a total of 5 classes. In Darktide we can share most of the weapons instead so we have abilities which are based on having grenades(veteran), flash bangs (zealot), trowable weight (ogryn) and brain burst (psyker). Then we have as a second ability, Do more damage with gun (veteran) charge the enemies and have 1 critical hit (zealot), charge the enemies and push them (ogryn), push the enemies with a charge wave (psyker). it's kinda boring IMO and and a lot worse if I had to compare it to vermintide 2 but instead I'll compare it to vermintide 1 and mention that we simply do not have a 5 class at all, instead it's grenades and a shove. And yet in vermintide 1 we had potions and grenades already so why make grenades abilities?

All these changes were made for a reason or another and it severely hurt the quality of the game. but we have a paid cosmetic shop with premium cosmetics that clip trough your hair, float above your head or face, or better yet clip through themselves. and you can have the privilege of paying half the price of the game for 1 bundle for 1 character and it will have that lvl of quality. it's great.

it's alright. the game is clunky as hell but it can be fun. I wouldn't recommend playing it lone thought.

(EDITED)

Lovely game. Community is way better than it used to be. You will find the normal toxicity you can find in about every game but you will also find a lot of great people. The community is pretty active with people who make use of lootbot to play music with in-game instruments or people who make loadouts and cosmetics (frankensteiner or normal ones) and the fighting groups that organise... groups fights.

Right now if you pick it up knowing it's difficult at the beginning and you like medieval games then you should at least clock in 50 to 100 hours in the game.

As for the content there has been a bunch lot of new cosmetics, new maps, a good amount of new weapons, and a lot of reworking on map balance and features.
