If you follow gaming news or reviews even a little bit you've probably seen praise for this game, and I think it's worth all the hype. Instabuy.

3 really innovates on the horror FPS genre by turning the whole sequel into a zombified husk of the earlier games. Now that's spooky.

It could be a decent FPS without the FEAR moniker, but even that's really held back by a half-assed PC port.

The core gameplay loop is actually pretty okay.
The netcode is bad with rubberbanding on every other server, cheating is prevalent, unlocking new guns requires a lot of grinding, and the UI is straight up revolting. Pass.

Unique idea, pretty good execution. The whole concept of survival horror is about making the player feel underpowered and vulnerable, and tearing off three of your limbs at the very beginning of the game is a pretty effective way to achieve that.

The controls work really well for the design of the game. Somehow they're very intuitive only until the moment you lose your cool, at which point it becomes very easy to make mistakes, which leads to more panic which leads to more mistakes and so on. A lot of the game's difficulty comes organically - don't panic, and you'll be fine. Contrary to a lot of reviews, the game felt pretty generous with ammo and syringes for the most part, especially if you're willing to backtrack a little to keep your inventory full (and there was an update that increased the amount of ammo available after posting this).

The story doesn't take the spotlight, but what's there is so-and-so. Most of it is found on computer screens and notes (some of which really could have used something else than a random piece of paper), and the protagonist will occasionally comment on his findings. Speaking of the protagonist, he's not your your average survival horror guy - you'll probably stop feeling bad for his predicament after you hear him talk. Outside of that, the writing felt a bit cliche and the dialogue hammy, especially before the final boss - Luce would put Albert Wesker to shame. Speaking of the final boss, it's the worst part of the game and ends with a sequel hook.

While it's relatively short, I feel like the game being longer would not only overstay its welcome but also give me carpal tunnel syndrome. If you're into survival horror, consider this when it's on sale.

Actually pretty damn good! At a surface level, it's nothing special - a slightly faster Halo multiplayer, with the soul taken out and portals added in. And I don't even like Halo's multiplayer.

The game is so much greater than the sum of its parts. The movement is basic, the art style is generic, the guns aren't memorable (except for the ridiculously beefy shotgun), but the portal mechanics work so damn well that it makes the game stand out, especially after a couple of hours of play, as it becomes more natural to use them mid-combat. So far the map design seems decent too.

Aww yeah. This was THE game of my early teens. The campaign's still fun, and the remastering is miles above H1A's. Especially the cutscenes, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ they're beautiful.
The port itself is okay for the most part. The game runs smoothly and the mouse controls work well. The graphics settings are basically a single on/off setting though.

The multiplayer's what you'd expect. A slow-ass arena shooter with a console game's matchmaking.

Despite some jank and a engine held together with duct tape, STALKER is the most immersive game series I've ever played. It's not for everyone and the start can be straight up painful, but if you're looking for an atmospheric, unique shooter, it's incredible. There's also an excellent modding community and the series really shines with mods.
