I have to say I absolutely LOVE the design of this character. It fits so well with the theme and feel of the game, but the Hermit has far too few scaling options available. Act 1 is easy enough, just upgrade Snapshot, play smart and that is good enough. But Acts 2 and 3 are just brutal.
I don't know if the designer of this mod is checking this discussion at all, but if so:
I'd love to work with you to help tweak the character to make it better and more balanced.
Cheers.
Perhaps Combo should be rare. It's probably okay for this to happen occasionally, like Dead Branch/Corruption, but it seems too easy.
Anyway, great work on the mod! My experience so far was fun, bug-free and engaging. :)
This character has a "strong start, weak finish" feel to it. Often, you can dominate hallway fights with tremendous burst, but longer fights can be a struggle.
Black Wind, Cursed Weapons, Grudge, and No Holds Barred (with Memento, of course), can close out fights on the first turn (Elites even), but bosses get rough. The Heart, especially, is borderline undefeatable, unless you have a VERY good deck. My last run I barely managed it, using every single potion I had, and having to play cards in just about perfect order (took 15 attempts to actually win). Had my deck been slightly weaker, or I didn't have "don't die the first time" relic, I would have been toast. It seems like Magnum is the only card that can reliably take on bosses in later acts.
Similarly, the Shotglass artifact almost guarantees that you coast all the way to the end, since being able to basically use 2 potions every fight is insane. But it means that you can't hoard them all against the Heart........
This character can't reliably apply weak (Glare is quite a weak card). Ghostly Presence is your only reliable way to do so, and is thus a must pick most of the time. There is no sustained mana generation, so you can't go on for too long. Overwhelming Power and Eye of the Storm can make for some fantastic openings, but after that, you fizzle out.
All in all, it's a really fun character. Snapshot is surprisingly strong as a card, often being able to provide 20+ defense with the right setup. Cards are balanced fairly well for the most part. Some of the "shuffle a curse into your deck" cards are a bit bad, though. Spray and Pray, for example, isn't good enough to justify shuffling a bad curse into your deck. If it upgraded to be a 4x4 attack (instead of 5x3), that might be enough.
Cheers!
