You can just use "Whiff of the old brimstone" (grenade replacement). It's the exact same hue as the armor.

I last checked on Friday 14th when it wasn't. Should've tested Demoman loadouts again before I posted here, because now it indeed works. Looks good. :) I had expected the fix to be part of a TF2 patch, so when I didn't see an update I assumed Valve was still working on it.
Maybe Valve can then re-add the sabatons (armored boots) which were part of your original model as a primary weapon slot item with the same stats as the Ali Baba's Wee Booties/Bootlegger. That way a) we could have the armored boots along with the armor set, b) the Demoman could equip boots in his primary slot in medieval mode without them being blocked by the Dark Age Defender, and c) Valve would not need to playtest a new weapon slot item as t he stats would be identical to the Wee Booties.
Despite the fact that the final version, the Dark Age Defender, contains no boots, the misc blocks both the Ali Baba's Wee Booties and the Bootlegger from being equipped in the primary weapon slot! Which makes the Defender useless as a cosmetic misc in medieval mode ; the Booties/Bootlegger were specifically designed so that the Demoknight could utilize his primary weapon slot in medieval.
I assume this is some sort of unintentional remnant from the fact the Mail Bomber ensemble used to contain armored boots but the Dark Age Defender doesn't, yet the game still thinks the Demoman's feet area is occupied? Can this be fixed?
I just bought this item and tried it out in my medieval Demoknight loadout. While I had hoped this could be equipped along with the kilt misc, I understand why it doesn't due to both items having modified crotch plate. A pity the tunic wasn't included in the final version. (cont.)
