Description
Welcome Home!

Hello Space Engineers, welcome to the second installment of the Far From Home scenario , Close To Home.

Having travelled 25000km across open space, you arrive home to an empty house, finding a message left by the Unyielding Dealers [UDDE], containing some disturbing information.

You will be engaged by the UDDE to visit Mars to discover what has happened to their people and retrieve certain alien technologies, the catch being you must remain on Earth and complete the mission via remote control. This is a engineering and logistical scenario, with maybe a few pesky Space Pirates thrown in to keep you on our toes.

My Playthrough and Making the Scenario

I am sharing my own playthrough of this scenario on my Close To Home YouTube Series . While it was always made for me to play, I also went to great lengths to make it in such a way that others could enjoy it. Much of the making of the scenario I did livestream, so if you wanted to having a looking, there is a playlist here.

At the time of publishing this scenario, I have barely made a dent in my playthrough, so while I have done testing, there are bound to be some errors. If you come across any, let me know and I'll do my best to fix them.

There are also a couple of other YouTube playthroughs of this scenario:
CMDR-V-UncleJ Playlist
Millman84 Playlist
Darkehart Playlist

Mods and Requirements

All the grids in this scenario are pre-placed, they don't spawn in, meaning there is already a substantial PCU count. While it's not massive, it is large. I don't know how to compare or rate the PC performance requirements, so can't be more specific than that. Some of the grids you will be able to delete out of the entity list as you progress.

The initial voxel map will also be large. The scenario is designed to use the Oreless Planets Mod to remove all vanilla ores and boulders. I have manually placed each of the resource types in specific locations, which is part of the story and challenge.

Mods Camera Panning by Digi and HUD Compass by Zelious will make you travels easier. Vanilla laser antenna power consumption I believe is too high, especially considering how you will use them in this scenario, Hull's Economical Laser Antenna by Hull Breach will be a must to avoid much frustration.

The remainder of mods in the collection, are either quality of life improvement and/or personal favorites I use in all my playthroughs.

Walkthrough Guide

Close to Home Scenario Guide contains more details around the intent of the scenario how it should be played, along with a walk through for if you get stuck. While there are spoilers, this is predominantly an engineering and logistical challenge, so advance knowledge of the story shouldn't affect your enjoyment too much.

Troubleshooting/Bugs/Updates
- The Orebot on the moon can run out of power depending on how long it takes the player to get there The station in lunar orbit is in range of a beacon that flashes up every 30 seconds, so longer than that and it's probably flat. GPS co-ordinates are in the guide.
- Text API mod added to mod collection (dependency for HUD Compass)
- Mars diagram, the North and South GPS are transposed. The updated version can be identified by note in bottom corner 'v2 corrected'. The datapad in the restricted section is correct.
- Blocks added to ore mining facility indicating AG depth
- Datapad added to desert outpost giving clue to NI location.
- Location map added to guide. Sized for LCD display using SEImage2LCD conversion tool.

Hi Chrisbitz. No in a word. I am still playing the Close to Home scenario myself and haven't started building the third instalment yet.

Is there any news on your 3rd instalment scenario? I'm searching for a scenario that I haven't already done, that's up to your standard, but can't find any! :-)

I don't know PAVO97, I occasionally switch to friends mode with a second PC to get an extra camera angle without issue.

Do I by any chance break the game if I switch to online public multiplayer?

Thanks for the feedback Chrisbitz. Yeah I still have some challenges to face in the scenario, I've only just secured the resources, remote time is coming.

I've just finished the scenario (with some cheating) and thoroughly enjoyed it. I really enjoyed the lack of ores, and the time taken to gather them, although I missed some of the clues, but the remote control travelling was just too hard for me, but I loved trying to get it working, and after giving up on the remote control bit, I really enjoyed exploring all the places to visit!
I also liked the use of the new automatons blocks, like when <this> is done, timers start!
Thanks for all the incredible hard work you put into it!

I'm now going to look for your other scenarios!

Here is a trick for using laser antennas in a singleplayer game :
Once you connect them and check the permanent connection, If you cannot remotely control the distant ship, save the game and reload it, now it should work

The setup I used to connect the two planets was a satellite at each planet with a laser antenna,
linking to the surface of the planet with a regular antenna. (On Mars I just parachuted a bunch of small grid antennas relais to the surface)

I was not able to fix the pipeline since when I picked up that pipe on the ground the hinge on the pipe exploded. So I just built a ship with a hinge and a reserve of hydrogen to connect to that last pilon to power it up

Thanks for the kind feedback Surprisepoultry. You're not wrong about the laser antennas, haven't got to that stage yet but I go it with my eyes open. I've learnt to put them in orbit helps, planet based ones can fail on you due to voxel load in.

Thank you for the scenario. You obviously put a lot of effort into it. It was a lot of fun and got me going for a more hours than I want to admit.

For the record, laser antennas are not fun to use. I had to reload some saves because of how finicky they are.

Fixing the pipeline on Mars was definitely the hardest thing to do. Especially the piece of pipe that was just on the ground. I lost my welder ship hooking that one back up.

Thanks for sharing Rev, always good to know how others get on. Next scenario will have adversaries, did consider it here, but thought a lucky shot on the antennas risked making it frustrating rather than challenging.
