That gene is just XML, so if something caused them to stop it would be either some vanilla behavior, or a mod changing their behavior.
I've got it on my to-do, but no promises as to when I'll get around to implementing it.
That sounds more like the pawn has the Slime resource, in which case the slime resource gets reduced and turned into food. Is the pawn a slime-hybrid of some sort?

They shoudn't be able to pick up armor if they have the armor blocking one, or vice versa for clothing. However, unlike the one that blocks all clothing, the partial block ones are based on tags names, and some mods don't put the word armor anywhere in their tags/tradetags/etc.

I'd guess that the RBSE modder flagged the exoskeleton as "isBad" and "everCurableByItem", which basically tells the game that stuff like healer mech serums should be able to "cure" it. Either that or something is going terribly wrong.
