It is possible that Corvo didn't help Griff in High Overseer Campbell as Griff sells Corvo the 2nd lens magnification blueprint, and if you play as Corvo in 2 his mask does not have level 2 zoom.
Now, of course this is likely just a game design decision, so that you don't just start the game with everything and have a chance for progression, just feel it's an interesting thought.
Also it could also be possible that the level 2 zoom just broke through the small parts wearing out from repeated use
Not meant to be a correction or anything, just a random thought I had in regards to having just rescued Griff in a canon playthrough :)
(P.S. Hello again ThePugHybrid! You likely don't remember me but I was the guy who pointed out the painting from the art dealers safe in Dunwall tower in Dishonored 2 5 years ago :P)
This isn’t really related to your question but Corvo didn’t steal out of callousness, but because he is canonically kleptomaniac. This is referenced at multiple points in dishonoured 2
Maybe that's why he sparred Daud and the Whalers. Because Jessamine was a kind ruler, and wouldn't want Corvo to kill out of a desire for revenge but out of necessity. He'd already beaten him in combat, after all.
Or maybe this was Corvo's way of exacting his revenge. Basically showing Daud that he could have killed him, but ultimately choosing not to. Especially given that Daud either forces the other Whalers to watch (low chaos) or has them join in (high chaos). They would have witnessed Daud being beaten, and by one who was not one of them. The ultimate humilation.
And given that this choice takes place in front of Jessamine's statue, I think the fact that she was such a kind person in life, not willing to let anyone die, might have had an effect on his decision. Though even Corvo says he doesn't know what made him spare Daud that day. Perhaps we can only speculate.
Regardless, Daud and the Whalers seriously have to go. I know that would change the story, but there really isn't an excuse for that. How could Corvo actually live with himself knowing that he spared the man and gang that killed Jessamine Kaldwin? Corvo killed Havelock and The Pendletons while eventually killing the Lord Regent in the future, but not Daud and the Whalers?I'm sure she's rolling in her grave knowing that, and Emily would resent it. I think Corvo is a bit too forgiving canon wise.
