Yes there was Destiny Con that became Guardian Con that was shortened to GCX and became a bigger and more general convention like Penny Arcade Expo became PAX.
I mean the first "sunsetting" was the roughest as that removed the expansions mentioned but they stopped doing that and the intention was always for smaller seasonal content to rotate out. Seasons weren't as broad as expansions as they didn't really add to the playable world most of the time outside of their specific seasonal activity and the stories were short but there were just a lot of them that it added up over the years.
