it's hard to follow up Doom 16 - you just can't have the same surprise or splash factor.

that said, the haters of this game are wrong. i don't know what their points are, but they're wrong. this is one of the few remaining games I will be an elitist / snob about in the sense that you have to play it on the highest difficulty to really "get it". if you do, and you let all the mechanic click, you'll love it

I love this game. I have not played too many diceroll games, but this added a lot of good wiggle room to experiences I see as more punishing, like Disco Elysium. Would love to play more like this.

My only "knock" on the game is that it seems fairly easy to win when you're ahead, and hard to catch up when you're behind. However, this might be because most of my failures were in Physical checks and I got myself killed.

Played the whole thing from start to finish on Steam Deck, and worked fine (except that you lose your cursor after you complete a playthrough, at which point you have to manually kill the game, but works great otherwise)

In this game you can find jars of mountain dew and use that to cram more bullets into a 6 round revolver, which I consider to be the mark of a good video game.

Taco Pizza
Good if you're in the mood, but ultimately not as good as either a straight up taco or straight up pizza.

This game is really cool on paper, but in practice isn't for me. It cribs a lot from games I have a lot of affinity for, but at the end of the day is just kind of a slurry of low stakes tedium.

The game definitely has it's highlights - I think the writing is surprisingly good, and there are a lot of interesting cult mechanics. Unfortunately, I'm usually just left wanting the depth of a a standalone game in either the roguelike/management genres.

The game's two prominent halves (dungeon crawling / cult management) feed into each other, but not in a satisfying way. In similar games, clearing a dungeon floor might give you a new cool power that will unlock a new overpowered aspect of your build. In Cult Of The Lamb, you've got a good chance of clearing a floor and unlocking one of dozens of path tiles for your cult base. This might be fun for some people, but for me is just wholly uninteresting.

To me, this game is an example of scope creep. I don't need fishing, or knucklebones, or a huge number of cosmetic items for a roguelite or a management...lite. Would have loved to see deeper mechanics in either area.

This game rules. Guns feel good, levels are interesting for the most part.

My one complaint is that the checkpoint system makes it too easy. Right before Steam prompted me to write this review, I was playing a level with a boss fight at the end, inside of a pit with a ton of other really hard enemies. I'm also playing on the hardest difficulty. When you die, you just resume at the last checkpoint with full health. All the enemies you've killed so far remain dead - they don't refresh when you do. As such, I respawned at the top of the boss pit and was able to rain rockets into it that pretty much negated any challenge.

The checkpoint system is unique, in that they are in-world beacons you interact with. Enabling a new checkpoint will disable your old checkpoint, but you could still move around the level and activate whichever one you want. This is interesting, and maybe the devs are taking this approach to lean into the leaderboards (which are well thought out & easy to navigate) for interesting speedrun strats / respawns, but for your average non-leaderboard chasing player, the checkpoints can suck the wind out of challenging encounters.

The other options is to restart the level entirely, which is also not really what I'm interested in. The levels are all decently sized (10 to 20 minutes of medium paced play on Ultra Hard), so a full restart would be a hefty setback when it comes to time spent.

All that said, I strongly recommend this game to any fans of the new or old Doom games. Or fans of videogames in general! Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

This game looked like it should be right up my alley - I am almost constantly seeking out "strange" media.

However, this game didn't really scratch any itch for me. To me it was a bit too light on story, and a bit too heavy on pressing the W key. There were some fun dialog sections, and it was a shame there weren't more of them to see, as I enjoyed the writing. Each time I thought the dialog might be continuing in a compelling direction, I'd just be dropped back in my car or a forest, where I would hold the forward key for what felt like much too long. Like, to the point of figuring I was definitly missing some action. Also, this game does that thing where things vanish or reappear when you look away, except once or twice I was able to actually see the reappearing (the object respawned when it was still in my FOV), which really broke the illusion for me.

While I cannot recommend this game, I don't think it's bad, just not for everyone. Would be interested in checking out a project from this developer with a little more meat on its bones.

Folks complaining about the update and suspense are just mad they can't freely camp anymore.

This is one of my favorite games in years. Incredibly unique, immersive, and scary. Definitely give it a shot.
