Prefacing this by saying I have a *lot* of hours on this game on a cracked copy, I've only recently bought the game legitimately because I think the game deserves it and I only DON'T eventually pay for games I pirate if they end up being genuinely unenjoyable and a waste of time. This game absolutely does not fit the criteria of "a waste of time," lol.

Compared to Dark Souls 1 and 3, it's amazing, just being a little better than DS3 imo. Compared to Bloodborne and Sekiro, it falls short by quite a decent margin. Invasions are just completely ruined 50% of the time by dunce caps abusing RGK and ganking with 50 Dragon Communion incants, and there are a LOT of ways you can choose to completely trivialize the game and make it super boring for yourself, but assuming you're just playing the game and not intentionally going out of your way to experience the bad parts? Yeah, it's pretty solid. The gameplay feels MUCH slower than faster souls games like BB and Sekiro, but that's usually not a bad thing, and there are still plenty of fast bosses to scratch that itch (Rellana [DLC], Malenia, Radagon, Godfrey, and more).

I've experienced VERY few bugs that are genuinely game breaking, and even fewer that occur without doing super specific tasks that you only do once per playthrough. The progression is very freeing and there's practically infinite branching paths to explore right out of the gate, so if you're really just not having a good time with a mandatory boss, go do some other content for a little while and come back to beat their ass with a super overleveled build.

The soundtrack and visuals are both phenomenal and up there with some of the best I've ever heard/seen. Definitely worth while it's on sale. The DLC is also basically doubling the base game's amount of content and holds up to the same level of quality as the base game, save for some stinkers like Golden Hippo and debatably the final boss depending on your build and point of view. On 720p and low graphics settings, the game runs at an average of 60 FPS in most areas on my 1050 ti, with some areas dipping down to 20 FPS occasionally.

8/10 game. Could easily be 10/10 with some more focus on balance.

Absolutely phenomenal game. (This review is content spoiler-free!)

I'll start off with the things I don't like about this game. Firstly, you are given essentially zero direction on where to go or progress next, moreso than other Metroidvanias I've played (granted, not that many). Although I'm pretty confident that this is intentional, and you're meant to be immersed in the feeling of being lost, from what I've seen most of the fanbase loves this aspect; I'm just not that kind of person.

That's it. Yeah, that's literally it, that's basically the only thing I don't like about this game. The artstyle is amazing, the soundtrack is probably the best soundtrack I've ever heard, the gameplay is *very* freeing with what it allows you to do. It doesn't feel like you're being dragged by an anchor the entire time and having your mobility locked down, you're very free to move however you want and aren't effected by momentum at all. You don't have a ton of means of attacking (not including gimmick charms like Dreamshield, Weaversong, Glowing Womb, etc) but.. you don't really need to. In combat, nearly all of the focus is on dodging enemy attacks, which isn't easy. It emphasizes its strong points and masks the relatively limited options of dealing damage very, very well to where it's not a very valid thing to complain about. Unlocks are spaced around the game VERY well, and have a smooth progression and feel very rewarding and refreshing to unlock. Traversing areas, if you don't get bored out of your mind getting lost like I do, feels very smooth and there's no awkwardly placed rocks in your face that mess up your flow and rhythm. Most of the enemy design is unique from the last in one way or another, be it changes in the way the AI moves and reacts to player input or entirely new attacks. After you've learned how the things you have at your disposal work, there aren't really any drastic dips in fun as long as you're actually progressing the game and not getting lost or stuck. Every point in progression is fun, including post-game when you're just hunting down hidden items or returning to places where you've thought "Oh I need an item for this that I'll unlock later." The game's boss rush mode is unlockable before beating the game, and takes place in a separate save file, meaning it doesn't directly interfere with your main playthrough, obviously not accounting for the player skill and experience gained from practice. A good chunk of the bosses are "filler" and aren't fantastic, but when this game's bosses hit, *they hit,* even on replays. Think NKG, PV, AbsRad, LK, (names abbreviated to keep spoiler-free) all I've had a blast with learning and mastering, and in some cases I still enjoy after getting to the point of them not being a real challenge. Attacks are fair and there's only a small handful of bosses that are unfairly RNG based (absrad ♥♥♥♥ off) out of a whopping 46. The sound design is incredible too, everything the player can do feels very responsive and satisfying.

The story and lore of this game deserve their own paragraph. While it can certainly be very confusing at first, since the game doesn't exactly shove it down your throat, it's also one of the best and most emotional stories I've seen in gaming. I can't cover very much without spoiling this work of art, but if you're not going to buy the game or played for a few hours and didn't enjoy it, please do check out Mossbag's full lore explanation on YouTube, it's VERY worth it.

10/10 game. Would be my favorite game of all time if sentimental reasons didn't exist. Spoiler: Shrek kills Iron Man at the end of the game. Ruined your experience, dumbass.
