This "game" is far more concerned with showing you things and the story, than letting you do anything with what they are showing you.

I've given this game a good runthrough, and I have to say that without a doubt, this feels more like someone trying to make a Dark Souls game than an actual sequel. I don't know what the ♥♥♥♥ the folks at From Software were thinking putting the Havok engine in this game, and handing it over to some other developer, but these guys didn't really get it. All they got was "Dark Souls is a hard game, let's make a hard game," and that was it. And personally, the difficulty is pretty tryhard at best. The game is built around trying to kill you. And that's about it. There's not immersion, there's no rhyme or reason to the creation of the levels: everything is meant to be adversarial. It's like playing Dungeons and Dragons where the DM is literally just out to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ kill your character constantly. And that wasn't at all what DS1 was about. There was a lot more to it than that.

To sum it up, DS2 is a poor imitation of what the sequel to such a great game like DS1 could have been. It's piss poor at best.

Like Painkiller (and other Doom-likes), it's very simple and good clean shooting fun. Honestly I think playing these games is much more theraputic than playing online shooters (or mobas for that matter).

I keep coming back to this game over and over, and as much as I love roguelikes I just can't love this game. Nothing I do in it seems to matter. I like the theme, but they take it to an extent where even the gameplay becomes meaningless. The chest is trapped so you don't get to open it? What a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ waste of time. "Oh but it's the theme dusty, despair." Purposefully making me feel like ♥♥♥♥ doesn't make it fun. I've played tons of balls-to-the-wall hard roguelikes and at least a sense of ADVANCEMENT after all the grinding is satisfying. Nothing about this game satisfies me. Characters will randomly go down the toilet, the artifacts you throw on your characters are a roll of the dice, the stress system is dumped all over your characters, and all the resources you recieve are drained by the ridiculous prices to the point where this game is a giant ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ windmill of a grinder. It's literally Roll the Dice to Grind: The Game. You will spend 2 hours preparing for a mission only for it to fail miserably, and the slog is only exemplified by the insanely slow crawl through Random Number Generator-ville. If I wanted to pop back in Dragon Warrior, or Final Fantasy 1, and fight ♥♥♥♥ over and over running around, I would, but at least I'd have an overmap. These are just very pretty hallways that don't interest me with anything other than lots of GOTCHA moments. GOTCHA DUSTY....OH WAIT 5 SECONDS LATER GOTCHA AGAIN! Repetitive and entirely too frequent, too ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ soon.

I also couldn't give two-flippin-♥♥♥♥♥ about the "upgrade your base" system. This is a dungeoncrawl. I'm not here for sim city.

My point is, they didn't try anything new with the genre, and instead made it HALF of the genre game, and then filled it with doodads and other systems (stress), and then the UNECESSARY EVIL OF ALL: stretched the levels and combat so much so that instead of taking 2 hours to get through several dungeons, you're taking 2 hours to get through 1. And don't give me that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about "careful planning," there's a point where it gets way too ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ autistic. Go play Stone Soup, NetHack or Dwarf Fortress if you want something with a little more substance and just about as much rng. I was just playing and I'm like "man I would rather be spending my time playing Dungeons of Dredmor, or FTL, or Rogue Legacy, or Risk of Rain or ANYTHING other than this piece of ♥♥♥♥" because the change of scenery and the character ascension factor (despite whether you screw up or not) is at least satisfying to me. It gives me pleasure. Like videogames should. Unlike this game, and Super Meat Boy. No thankarino, Arino.~

There's a point where "challenge" just becomes a buzzword for people's taste in fun. Let's be honest guys, it's pretty colors, themes, a guy who does really good voice acting, but at it's core it's a game with a lot of elements, potential, but they executed it poorly in order to make the Kickstarter fans feel like they bought something with a lot of content by stretching it out. That's what most developers do when they make an "Insane" difficulty in their games. They stretch it out. I WANT to love this game. Everything I want is in it. The only problem is the guy behind the wheel won't get the ♥♥♥♥ out of the car and let me drive the damn thing.
