I used to play this game a lot when it came out on PS4 (9 years ago jesus christ), but after I grown a bit and started playing again, I realized this game is ass even by 2015 standards.

I sank more than a 100 hours back in the day into this game. I remembered it as a great open-world, survival, crafting game with plenty of story and missions. While that is still true, now that I played the beginning again (which imo should be the most captivating, most polished part of the game if you want to have a good first impression), as for gameplay and story-wise it all felt really sloppy and uninspired.

And once all the memories came back to me, about what this game was really like, I didn't feel like I want to go through the game again actually.

First of all, the game has a really rigid, robust engine, which was outdated a long time before the game even came out. Long loading screens, strict controls, boring movement and combat, and the graphics are just simply bad. The characters don't fell human at all, their faces are emotionless, rough (by means of detail). The dialogues they were given are plain and unrealistic. The world itself is okay-ish? Everything fits into the theme of the game, everything is a bit shiny. What the game lacks in my opinion is variety. There aren't really any parts of the game that stand out in particular. Sure, we got places that you visit quite a lot (and plenty that only once or never), but ultimately each has the same props and assets. There are only a few places that come to my mind when I think about this game, but not because of the level-design.

The story itself holds a great potential in the beginning and sets a very motivating goal: finding your son. Without giving spoilers, I believe that that part of the game is not bad. Other than that, there are a few factions that you can do quests for, but none of them offer a chance to bond with it. Factions are made up of people, but most of them are just needed to progress with the mission, and that's it.

Oh and the "choices" when you answer are just ridiculous. You got the 4 types of answer and they are always going to to the same thing: the good-guy, the bad-guy, the sarcastic/speculative-guy, the leave-the-conversation-option. And being the bad-guy is just simply not worth it and you just end up usually killing the other person. They choice-system is just a joke, it doesn't deepen the game at all.

And once again, the character design as mentioned, makes it nearly impossible to achieve that. In the game you feel alone because of this. Sure, you can choose companions, but they repeat the same dialogue over and over again, and after a while they just feel like a talking carry-bag. In the settlements there are plenty of NPCs, but entirely for just the sake of it. They don't have families, personal story or talents, or friends. You cannot interact them in any interesting way, and they again keep repeating the same lines.

The skills and perk system is just a simple skills and perk system, there isn't any more creativity to it. It just buffs your stats and that's it.

The crafting system is okay, it let's you customize a variety of things. It was a great idea that each item can be broken down into materials, but at the same time, it produced a LOT of items to just be literally useless and a pain in the ass if you have them, because they just occupy space. And in literally EVERY office for example, you find your usual set of useless pens, clipboards and mugs.

The settlement system is also kind-of okay. I really enjoyed it back in the day, but even then sometimes the building mode just didn't work. Sometimes it's so hard to line up different things, and it doesn't always let's you place it down the way you'd want it to, overall it's very rigid. The limit is also pretty low for how much you can actually place down, but there are mods that can help with that, but the engine problem comes back again, because it cannot handle that many props and objects very well (performance wise). However you can try to make your settlement feel cozy with some furniture, lamps and stuff (from mods or dlc as well), and that's actually not bad, but it's not a big variety.

What actually still holds up to this day and I really like it is the main title theme, and Diamond City Radio, they got some bangers that I still know by heart, it really sets the mood for the game.

SO OVERALL, I'd say it aged horribly, and made me question it's "greatness" in the first place. If you want to play a survival/crafting/building game, there are much better options. If you want to play a great story game you have even more options. If you want to play a game, for which the gameplay feels great, and the world sucks you in, again there are better games even at that time. So it lacks a lot in every genre that this game tries to be. And I think the opinion of "well it's a bethesda game what did you expect" is just stupid. So if you want to experience Fallout, lot of people love New Vegas, I'm sure it gives a much better experience than this.

One of the best strategy games out there.

You really need to calm down a think a few minutes before making a move sometimes and when it works out it's very rewarding. There's also an abundance of mechanics, weapons, loadouts you can choose from.
There are lot's of different types of enemies, and even on the last mission you can meet a new one. These enemies can differ a lot not only in weaponry, abilities, but behaviour. Some tend to go to covers and shoot from there, some just go and face you head on, some you can hack and control them, some can control your troops, if i were to list them all it would be really long.
I've played the campaign through once, and i really enjoyed it. There's a story so that your missions actually commit to a long distance goal. Outside of combat you can manage your base, which is called Avanger, where you can do research, build projects and stuff. There is also the map, where you can go for supplies, recruit, make contact with other regions, which is crucial to progress in the story.
One of my favourite part is the customization. You can literally can change any aspect of your soldiers: hair, face, gear, voice, name, attitude, and so on.
There is also steam workshop for this game, which works really well with the customization. I'm a very big Star Wars fan, and there are lot's of clone armour models, guns. I turned all my soldiers into 501st legion clones and as they progressed i gave them more and gear. When a clone became Colonel, which is the highest rank, i made him a famous clone like Rex, Fives, Echo, Jesse, even from other legions such as Wolffe, Cody, Hammer, and i've absolutely loved leading a team of clones against aliens, it added so much to my experience.

Only bad thing i can say is that the game runs sometimes laggy, i turned down the graphics and it got better, but it's not so silky-smooth even with my medium-high-end PC. And loading can also take some time, but during a 1 hour combat session there isn't any if you don't save-scum.

Overall, if you are interested in a squad turn-based game, this one is for you, don't hesitate too much on it.

With glitches and patience you can have lots of money and the game becomes fun after that. You can roleplay or just have fun with your friend even without money. I've so many good memories of this game.

The game itself without any dlcs or mods it's amazing and you can spend a lot of hours easily. The mod support is amazing, there are so many possibilities. One thing I don't really like is the amount of dlcs and their prices. In overall you should buy this game if you like city planning, it's the best out there.

Really easy to pick up. I can't get mad at this game online like any other game. There's also so much to learn for a new player and you can see what's next always.
