♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, skyrim with space skin, you would expect more than boilerplate exploration and mechanics out of 8 years of game dev. frame drops, and I've got a 4090, even at 21:9 1440p. Todd's claim that this game is already optimized is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid, and New Atlantis looks cartoonish at times even at max settings

the biggest problem with this game is the lack of asset streaming

every "planet" landing spot is just a randomly generated plain with different filters, settings for gravity, and randomly generated hazards which are really shallow and it's easy to look through this illusion. Elite and NMS did planetary approach 8 years ago and made it seamless and immersive through asset streaming, there is no excuse for this game not doing the same when it started its development around the same time

the only unique gameplay aspect seems to be the powers you gain after fetching a few artifacts, and the way to get those is identical to words of power from Skyrim. EXCEPT, instead of finding it organically through exploring, you just fast travel to a building and fly around an empty room. The more I play this game, the lazier it feels

sure, gun-play is better, but making the gun-play barely on par with other FPS games isn't a great "achievement", it should be a bare-minimum requirement for AAA games with this kind of budget. especially after a company has so many years of experience making Fallout games

exploration is like their other games, but you explore the menus instead of the world to get to the mini dungeon. NOTHING in this game actually feels like it exists.

it locks out basic mechanics like pickpocketing, speech checks and using your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ jetpack behind level-up points to give a sense of "progression"

people being fine with this kind of release by Bethesda is the reason they companies will keep getting away with minimal innovation, and it's terrible for the whole industry

Best VR experience, hands down. Yes, even better than Beat Saber.

And holy ♥♥♥♥, the ending. HL3 confirmed.

Went into it completely blind. Quickly reached the top of my favorite games. It has everything that makes a great game.

Story: Beautiful and really, really convoluted. One of the best writings I have seen in video games, it stood out for me along with games like the Witcher 3, although this left more of an impact on me. For people planning to buy this game: do NOT stop after the first ending. It is not even half of what the game has to offer. It is a huge emotional rollercoaster which makes you... think.

Sound: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, the soundtrack. It fits in perfectly with every aspect, with seamless transitions. One of the few soundtracks that I plan on purchasing. Keiichi Okabe did a wonderful job with it. It will be stuck in your mind for quite a while.

Gameplay: It is very fun to play. Amazing animations, and makes you feel really powerful. Upgrades make quite a difference. It has a Dark Souls-esque way of handling death, where you go to your dead body to recover all that you lose. It is also really interesting in the way that it combines different genres of games like Hack and Slash, Bullet hell and RPG elements into one.

Characters: Mild spoiler alert here. This game does a really great job of forming a bond between you and the characters. They are much more complex than they seem at first, and will blow your mind when you find out the reason why they act like they do.

World: The world is huge and diverse, with very interesting side quests and NPCs which really do add to the game. The side quests will help you learn about the characters themselves. There is also a huge amount of lore to discover, so I really do recommend exploring. Even though the graphics may not be the best, the other elements certainly make you ignore that point. The colour palette is quite unique, as it is dynamic to suit the mood of the surroundings perfectly.

In the end, I believe that this is a masterpiece that deserves more praise and exposure than it gets. It is one that prompted me to write a damn review, which I never really do seriously. It is a piece of art that could not be better conveyed in any other medium.

PS: While I haven't experienced any, if you have any performance issues, check out the subreddit /r/nier where there are quite a few fixes for it.
