Mandatory steam review of the year for level 4 badge but considering this game got everything but 2 nominations I feel it's justified to just give it to this one anyway.

Actually played games to be able to put a review instead of leaving it on idle and can genuinely say I had a ♥♥♥♥ time

TL;DR at the bottom of the review!

If you are picking between Left 4 Dead or this game it's really simple:

I don't recommend this one.

Crowbcat did an incredible job at pointing out pretty much every reason why L4D was such an amazing game using the developer commentary straight from L4D and L4D2 and his video is partially the reason why I'm writing a review at all. It's a very well made video. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links on steam reviews but I highly recommend checking it out. It's very clean and objective.

I however am not very objective.

I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate the characters in this game. Evangelo and Holly are straight up annoying stereotypes. Mom and Hoffman are realistically too weak to even be alive at the time period of the game. Doc has some of the worst voice acting I've heard in a videogame and Karlee and Walker are severely too ideal to be real. I had to google the characters cause I knew their were 8 and I forgot about Jim. 25 hours in and I've not heard Jim say anything memorable and IMO that says enough.

Min-maxing on top of teamplay don't mix whatsoever. I like co-op games. Payday, Portal, DRG, Castle Crashers, Rainbow Six, whatever. Find me a multiplayer game with any kind of teamplay and strategising and I probably enjoy it. I also enjoy min-maxing builds. I don't enjoy sitting in lobbies with 4 players doing a melee build to the point where you hinder each other. Payday 2 suffers from the same problems. You're spending a lot of time on card decks trying to get the best value out of cards for a playstyle. HOWEVER UNLIKE IN PAYDAY 2 you don't spend a lot of time on a map, and you do severely disbenefit from having multiple people with similar builds. You don't need 2 healers. In Payday I'd be jumping for joy if I had 4.

Impact is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Guns dont have any noticeable impact. These guys supposedly made that other zombie game that they put in the first sentence of the game description but they've learned nothing from making it. So unbelievably much dedication in L4D went to creating impactful weapons, enemies and environments whether trough outstanding animations, sound design or a spectacular physics engine. How could anyone ♥♥♥♥ this up? There's a whole developer documentary on it available in the game THESE GUYS made?

Enemy variations and sound design is another entry in these guys' playbook. Same issue. The "Ridden" are really dumb. Not just crap AI but also dumb looking. Hordes of indifferent enemies are only scary when you have no way of dealing with them. Project Zomboid, a top down survival game with a very minimalist artstyle , manages to make incredibly dumb zombies terrifying by doing everything right(except making them look scary) with good spatial sound design, outstanding background music and harsh punishments for mistakes. This doesn't one bit apply to the ridden. They're just an angry mob. Replace all of them with fences and they'd be exactly the same. A minor inconvenience that with a tiny bit of effort can be overcome by anyone.

Specials! These have to be cool right. You have your boomers, your chargers and your hunters except they all have variations with no distinguishable features except the ones that are extra annoying.
Not because they stun you, no no,
Because of the ongoing airhorn when they stun you.
Spectacular sound design here truly, no really, how the ♥♥♥♥ did this go trough playtesting and no one was like "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that sound is annoying".
Also bigger is not scarier. I'm not afraid of things because they are large. That's called megalophobia and it's fairly rare.

Truly boring game design. That level where you have to board up the library. Yea if you played the game twice you remember it, the one with awful lighting and those wall enemies. It's entirely random whether this is half intresting or not. There's a real chance only some basic enemies spawn here, you kill them and that's it. You're now spending 2-3 minutes looking around for windows to board up. This is terrible pacing and this board up mechanic is used more than once and neither time does it benefit the gameplay one bit.

Bosses.
...
Without spoilers, they're not good. The one that breaks a garage door can be beaten with a baseball bat without taking damage in single player on veteran. I know that because I tried. The rip-off witch is an incredibly buggy mess with animations like it's baby's first sfm project and the really big ones are really big sponges with no redeemable qualities after the first of many encounters.
..
once again, this is in their supposed playbook. The L4D tank was(is) a proper bossfight, with relatively good AI and intresting mechanics it's applicable on EVERY map in L4D and I don't feel as if there were situations where they were missplaced.

Also officially stating modding support is a no-go and online play being forced on players is such a ♥♥♥♥ move.

Not to forget PVP lmao

TL;DR:
-Playable characters suck ass.
-Guns have 0 impact, so they suck.
-Enemies suck, variety sucks, AI sucks, scare factor sucks.
-Special enemies suck even more.
-Bosses suck. second to last one is ok.
-Map design sucks.
-Pacing sucks ass.
-Modding support sucks.
-Who the ♥♥♥♥ says ♥♥♥♥ like by the creators of L4D when they have maybe 7* people in the development team of a game out of nearly 200(!!) people? That's their branding? They made Evolve and Leap sheep. Neither of which are playable anymore.

Left 4 Dead is truly an amazing game and I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone and everyone.

It's honestly incredibly nice.

I mainly use this for watching movies (in 3d!?) and emulating gamecube games(also in 3d???)

It outperforms quite a few of the paid varieties of virtual desktops, in performance and in environments which are really nice.

no idea how this is free though

Jagex is actively participating in predatory marketing schemes not unlike Diablo Immortal.

Daily loot boxes
Indirectly buying experience points trough proteans and supplies
Directly buying experience points trough lamps and bonus xp
Getting weapons and armor trough loot boxes
Getting in-game currency trough loot boxes
Premium currency that gives you benefits over other players trough pets and bank slots.

But it's got that sentimental value because of childhood memories so we're willing to cut it some slack.
