Really great pacing, choices that matter, characters it's easy to become invested in.

This is brilliant. First destruction sandbox game I've really been hooked on since Red Faction: Guerrilla. If you're into destruction, driving, physics, and puzzle-solving, don't hesitate to pick this up! Gameplay videos won't do it justice. What got me to pull the trigger was the Steam review that said 'better driving physics than most racing games' - this is absolutely true!

TL;DR: This game is about only one thing: killing demons. It does that well enough to cover any other flaws, and the upgrades you get with each hour of gameplay multiply the fun. I can now recommend this game, especially to any fans willing to get past the first 4 hours or so.

ORIGINAL NEGATIVE REVIEW:
These are my very early impressions (<1 hour played so far):
This feels like a modern adaptation of a 90s Doom game. 100% action, 0% story. Quite a departure from the deeper narratives of Doom 3 & DOOM (2016).

Pros:
+ Refines the fluid, fast-pasted arena combat from early games and DOOM (2016) - out of the gate you can double-jump and weapons don't need reloading

Cons:
- No story to speak of
- Environment is just a backdrop / obstacle course; no narrative elements to give it meaning / depth
- Strange ammo limitations / high reliance on chainsaw

In summary, this is a 90s Doom game brought into the 20s. Maybe that's not a bad thing... just not at all what I expected.

Will update my review once I've put at least 10 hours into the game.

UPDATE #1 (3 hours in): After coming to terms with the lack of story and just focusing on enjoying this as a mindless arena shooter, I've been pleasantly surprised by the game's progression.

New Pros:
+ Environments, while remaining a soulless backdrop, vary a lot and are nice to look at
+ A steady supply of codex entries begin to describe the world and your place in it
+ A rechargeable grenade & flamethrower upgrade you unlock within the first ~2 hours resolve the most frustrating balance issue called out by many negative reviewers: the possibility of running out of ammo & chainsaw fuel and losing all means of dealing damage to foes

New Cons:
- Combat is still fun, but there's clearly a 'meta' - not sure how I'd be fighting arachnotrons and cacodemons without the sticky bomb shotgun upgrade
- I purchased an ammo capacity upgrade, hoping it would alleviate my biggest gripe with the game. It increased my shotgun ammo capacity from 16 shells to... *drumroll*... 18 shells. *:|

Leaving the overall review as negative for now because it's still a huge step back from 2016.

UPDATE #2 (8 hours in): I think I finally get it.

An absolutely brilliant title. Art / gameplay / etc. evokes first impressions of Limbo.

Performance on high-end hardware: 3/5
Gameplay / fun: 3/5
Future potential: 3/5
I would recommend the game for $20, assuming you give it a shot for at least 5 hours.

This game is on point. Great compromise between realism and action! Like Rising Storm meets CoD2. Helps that it runs very smoothly.

2.9 hours. A long 2.9 hours of repetitive gameplay, at times interesting storytelling, and between them stretches of very. Very. Very. Slow. Walking. I played this game with friends, and the only thing providing any levity or motivation was the anticipation of the next hilarious mis-translation or grammatical error. We cannot recommend this game. It is forbidden.
