Official Profile Reputation System?
A great way to tell if you can trust someone or not is by checking their profile. The community has resorted to using a simple 'rep' system in the comments of a person's profile. '+rep' to trusted/friendly people, '-rep' if they're not. The main problem with this is that people can easily delete comments from their profile, hiding any negative reputation that they may recieve.

What i've thought for a while is, why not make an official place on user's profiles where people can click a '+rep' or '-rep' button, and have it shown on an offical graph or something. A ratio of plus to minus rep, with the number of people who've rated the person. You could also give the user a chance to add a note to their reputation vote, telling others why they voted.

The report system could also be integrated with the valve report system, making it easy for the public to see who is being nasty and who is being good. You could add categories alongside the note section, similar to those in the report page, with entries like 'Scammer', 'Hacker', 'Griefer', and so on which will automatically go through the current report system that steam uses.

And for those good guys, there could be a reward system for exceptionally good reputations. Possibly rewards like the current profile leveling reward system, or badges similar to those of Counter Strike's Prime badges.

Overall, I believe this will provide a reliable source of reputation, where the user cannot delete comments to create a bias in their favor. As well as helping new users, who may not be internet savvy, find people who they can trust.

If you have any possible additions or tweaks to the system add them down below.

Thanks for reading, hope it gets considered.

Terrible idea since people would just beg for +rep or -rep way more...
Lyneralia 24 sierpnia 2017 o 7:27
support from me, it'd be a great social feature, similar to imgur or reddit's points, but on steam profiles. seriously, like no benefits from the system, just a straight up reputation counter on people's profiles, just so at a cursory glance you can tell whether it's a scam bot or a legit person looking to trade or something for example.

Bad idea. People will use bot accounts or smurf accounts to artificially inflate their positive rep.

If you search past discussions you will see people already asked for this for many years:

Uggg, not another REP system. This will never be a feature on Steam and people can easly cheat the system with alt accounts and there is already a report system that works and ofc this wouldn't be complete without "getting free stuff"......

And the first part is not a real system and no one should go by +/- REP that is a player made system that means nothing and only used by scammers now.

there is no need for such a system at all, especially not for trading.

game/vac bans and also trade bans and trade probation are displayed publicly on the profile. for trading if the account got enough reports also a warning message is being displayed before finalizing a trade.

if such a system will be put in place, the only thing that will happen is that someone will make money by providing a service for fake reputation.

in other words:

there is no reliable source of reputation. even if there was ... it would not prevent the guy with a gazillion positive reputation to cash out one day on a big scam.

There is no need for a rep system.

If trades are done with-in the trade system, then they are safe.

Rep is only used for trades out side the trade system. Trades that are no supported or encouraged by Valve, so are at your own risk. By adding such a system, Valve would basicaly be endorsing such trades and that is not going to happen.

The system would be easy to manipulate too as people can just use alts, as for rep for rep and even have friends down vote users for no reason or simply because they disagree on something.

Is there any other advantage to having rep apart from using it to aid in scamming the unwary when trading outside of Steams own official trading methods?

I didn't say anywhere that this would be a trade system. It's literally cleaned up, professional, and more official version of the system that the community are already using. Reputation isn't all about having a social status or a positive trade history. The system is literally there to see if someone is being unfriendly, for their own personal gains.

To limit spamming of reputation, maybe only authenticated accounts could apply rep votes. Even with a limited amount of votes a week or something alike.

People are already using this system, Not for trades, why not just clean it up and put a valve tag on it?

I think most informed users know that the current unapproved, unofficial system is used purely by scammers for that purpose only, and that it is completely fake, and cannot be trusted. There is no system....edit....and no reason or need for one to exist.

yeah sounds good
and to those arguing "oh alt account spam", just make it so you need to be at least level x to rep and you also need steam mobile authentication activate for 7 days. easy.

i get a lot a friend requests so itd be handy to quickly check someones profile and be like "ok this guy as 3 million -reps and everyones calling him a scammer, i can just avoid this guy"

it works steam games even without those limitations so why not profiles

An invested scammer will make his profile look as credible as possible. Most successful scammers have high Steam levels and use mobile authenticator to trade without holds.
