Is there seriously a $100 upload fee now.
I wish we went back to Greenlight when the $100 was paid only ONCE and not per upload, and when the fee went to charity.

I can definitely see the argument for it being higher. $100 will take far less time to make then learning the necessary skills to make a game and then making something competent that people would want to play. If $100 is what stops someone then I would certainly question their passion.
$100 is a large sum, a sum that can get you a lot of better stuff than just an upload.

It already does get you more then just an upload. You get access to Steam's developer tools and other parts that only developers can access. There is also how the $100 investment can provide a huge return for a game done well and marketed. It may be the $100 could lead to creating a game developer company.

Like any good investment, may take time and require more effort, even beyond that of just making the game. Self advertising for the game tends to help increase sales, for example.

There is a lot more to it then just being able to upload. If someone just wants to make a quick game and give it out to everyone for free, there are many other options available.

You get it back when your games makes $1000, if it cant make that much then you shouldnt be on steam.

Then there is this as well. The $100 is to show you are not just uploading for fun, but as a serious developer. This makes the $100 a deposit.

What's the issue? You get it back if you make $1000.

Cuts down on the shovelware, it's a win-win for everybody. If you're not confident your game will get sales to reimburse that cost you might need to work on it a lot more.

Unless you're making shovelware, the $100 per upload shouldn't be an issue

A few years late, huh?

Greenlight idea sounded great but devs abused it a lot and the community went with it.

Early Greenlight was good because it got some great games onto Steam before it opened up, but later Greenlight was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad.

I'd imagine if you have the resources to make a game, I'm sure $100 is nothing in comparison.
If it really is an issue, I'm sure a tiny little $100 donation drive like kickstarter or something could help. You'd offer donators a free copy and you make the sales back from anyone interested if it's reasonably priced.

No absolutely disagree.

It is there for a purpose - a purpose I might argue that doesn't even go far enough.

Valve opened the floodgates, naively thinking that this would herald in some great games that would get the light of day and therefore sales. They'd made bad mistakes over games like Unepic in the past (which took many attempts to get through Steam).

But of course, we all saw how that went pear shape when people abused the ♥♥♥♥ out of it.

And sadly that still continues, because $100 isn't much of a gamble if you can fleece people.

So no sorry, you are quite, quite wrong.

Not only that but let's imagine for arguments sake the shovelware and "non" games weren't a thing here. If you are turning out and TRULY developing a game, then I'm sorry but $100 is nothing.

It does demonstrate that perhaps you shouldn't be putting your stuff on here, because you clearly are not spending money on all the things any "normal" dev would - legal fees, marketing, etc. Because if you were, you'd realise how silly moaning about a comparitively small fee is.

EDIT: Oh I just realised it's the guy who admitted to spamming stuff and then wondered why he got banned for spamming.

I think we can guess which way this "game" will turn out. Give me an A, give me an F....

Yeah it just doesn't add up at all.

At risk of making a no true scotsman fallacy, let's face it, no dev would be crying about a minimal $100 fee, when any normal dev, even a small indie, would spend more on assets, fixtures, services like heating or wages, marketing, basic legal stuff and so on.

It just shows the level of what we're talking about here.

I dunno, some of those assets copied games that are just nekkid anime boobies seem to make $1000 to get back the $100 easily enough...

It's really nothing to have your game visible and purchable on a global platfrom with millions of customers. I personally think the fee should be much higher to discourage the really bad game makers from clogging up the store. I looked at the 'specials' today and there is just so much crap I have to wade throug just to see a few decent games.

That would be discouraging developers who have next to no money and are living from paycheck to paycheck.

If anyone is interested here is the original blog post about why they went with $100 and not $500 or $1000
