Not Able to Scan the Surface

I was able to guide my survivors to successfully live and work underground, and allow them to finally produce the components needed to construct the elevator to the surface. Once there I was able to make it to the first POI, the blinking light, on foot.

However, I have no idea how to get them to begin scanning the biomes.

I have build the map table, and the shipping and receiving units. So I can transfer units to the surface along with supplies. But I must be missing something because no one is surveying or scanning the actual biomes on the surface.

What am I missing? Any help would be appreciated.

Did you make a scout vehicle? Those are able to be automated to both uncover and scan all the different biomes.

I had not researched the vehicle bay yet. I could have sworn I remembered that the colonists could scan while in the facility using the map table. But I might be remembering that incorrectly. I am surprised you need a vehicle to scan things... is there no way to scan without one?

While you can send out manual expeditions on foot, the intended means of exploration is via the vehicle bay and an exploration vehicle. The only scanning that can be done by colonists while underground is via the resource scanner. The resource scanner is used to uncover new resource deposits on the surface that can be mined via miner vehicles.
