Clean them out once in awhile.
Saying that though, I did recently try uninstalling the game in order to fix the borked workshop ships problem ... so maybe that wiped the backups?
Oh wait, no, they have the same create date, and the galaxies folder survived the recent purge.
I have another save where I played until I hit the barrier and explored all the faction territories around it to a distance of thirty or forty sectors. That file is approaching 5GB. I paused it because I heard Boxelware were going to add some new missions and quests, so I wanted to start a new game when those were introduced, but they're taking longer than expected, and now I've lost track of what I was planning in that save.
So I've started a new save with some mod missions from the Workshop, and am playing that more methodically. I've explored a large swathe of the galaxy around my spawn all the way to the rim, and inwards through naonite territory. I'm just beginning to make forays into trinium on that save now, and it's just ticked over into 2GB size.
