I love the sound of this game and bought it awhile back but the ship building sort of seems overwhelming
Glad to know I can get some pre madras and learn the mechanics and then slowly ease into personal designs
work shop dude lots of player made ships
But when you found a simple one-block ship, you can go into the build menu and select a Workshop design to apply to the ship right there in space, without being close to the station. Just so long as you have the resources to afford and build it, it'll be applied right away.
You have to have subscribed to the workshop design in advance though (of course).
Typically I make folders to organise the workshop ships. It's a little cumbersome but I load up the ship in a 'creative' game (unlimited resources) and then 'save current design' to the appropriate folder and subfolders.
Not sure if there's a better way to manage them, but one 'advantage' is that it lets me assess and 'fix' any design flaws (not enough energy, not enough energy containers, no integrity fields, no turrets etc.).
You guys have also inspired me to give it a go and try to create something of my own even if it ends up being terrible
I don't save them to separate folders (I don't have that many WS ships downloaded, only really stuff by Haurbus and Two-Hands, my fav builders). But I do the same thing editing them and saving them - partly to paint them up in my faction colours of orange and white with green highlights, but also to modify them where required. I just keep them all in the main folder, but with filenames describing what they are so they are in order and I can find what I want quickly and easily.
Show us what you come up with! Takes a lot of work, but given time and learning the mechanics you should be able to design something pretty decent...even I managed to build a couple of ships I'm happy with, and I'm utterly useless with the angles and all
The problem with this is that if you have too many ships in the workshop folder then the search box won't work properly.
I'll check out the Haurbus and Two-Hands creators, thanks for the tip!
For Haurbus (workshop won't let us search by author??)

For Two-hands try searching for NCI maybe (it's a Trek themed line, I have a bunch of them already I think)
The NCI aren't Trek themed. The guy does do a lot of Trek ships, but the NCI are a separate line of industrial tech which as far as I know aren't inspired by any preexisting franchise.
But yeah, I agree Haurbus' HON stuff are sublime, some of the best looking ships on the Workshop, and very different and unique to what many other creators put up. How he's got all those smooth curves to fit so well in such a blocky game is beyond me, and the tasteful use of neon glow is the cherry on top of the cake.
And then with Two-Hands' stuff, I feel like I'm a scientist at the Large Hadron Collider. I look at the tiny particles and think 'Wow, there's so much intricate detail here, it's amazing!'. And then I look even closer and see subatomic particles below the outer skin, and I think 'Oh goodness, there's a whole new level of detail below which is even more intricate, that's incredible! Where does it end?' And then I look even closer than that, and see that there's even more intricate detail on a smaller level still! And my mind is just blown.
*discrete cough*

Also note I wasn't trying to describe the entirety of everything under the NCI and/or N.C.I and/or N.C. Industrie line(s) -> but rather just give directions on how to find that creator's stuff on the workshop. The above link serves as a perfectly good launching off point for that. Cheers!
Don't worry about how functional your first build is, everyone's first build is "terrible". Just throw something together and fly it around. If it doesn't fly throw other stuff on it. I'd say this is definitely a game to learn as you go! As you play and explore the options you'll learn what kind of style you prefer. I like the huge colossal ships personally, maybe it'll take me a year to get to you, but there will be nothing left when i do XD. But you can design them however you want, sleek exploration vessels? Oh yeah! Giant cubes that are the extreme end of "optomization"? Sure why not. A swarm fleet? not my cup of tea managing it but you can certainly do it.
