any benefit to salvage vs just shooting wrecks?
It seems I get the guns and mods out of the wrecks just as often when shooting it with chainguns or whatnot compared to using salvage beams, except with salvage beams the speed is quite slower and the auto tracking is extremely tempermental... i guess not fully working?

It's a mix of cost per volume (all systems are high cost per volume) and the fact they just melt instantly for the most part when shot at with salvagers. So you're getting high yield from minimal effort/time. So long as you have tons of wrecks there is no point wasting time blowing up armor, you just jump from wreck to wreck and cherry pick the soft stuff.

With good salvagers, I do 1 million+/hour of salvage in a yard most of the time. I quick kill any invaders and quick destroy them with guns and only salvage soft stuff on wrecks.

The goal is to cherrypick the blocks which take the most to place i.e. thrusters engines cpu cores shields integrity ect.

ah, that makes sense... now that i think of it the armor plating did seem to not use so much mats :)

what about blocks embedded in blocks however? I do sometimes see this, usually inside armor blocks.

You blow up one of the plates and pick the insides.. It's like eating lobster. Don't eat the shell just break it to reach the good stuff :P

It's so much faster to just shoot wrecks that even if the salvage turrets do provide a bonus towards finding modules and turrets, I doubt that they are worth it. My ship can reduce even large wrecks mostly into dust in just a dozen seconds or so, small ships in just a couple seconds, way faster than salvage turrets can do it. But wait, you might say- what if I refit my ship to have like 8 salvage turrets? Well, maybe that would be faster, I don't know. If the tedious task of swapping out your modules and turrets for salvage, and then swapping the combat modules and turrets BACK in to replace your salvage turrets every time pirates or aliens show up (which is like once every 60 seconds) doesn't bother you, then be my guest.

I think that you will generally have better luck mining asteroids for resources too, since you can find those huge asteroids with over 100k resources in them; just jump around till you find one, swap out a few of your combat turrets for mining turrets, and just mine the crap out of a single spot for like 20 minutes. Rebind a keyboard key to fire you turrets, set something heavy down on the key, and go semi-afk while listening for the sounds of the combat music to start up. You won't mine the whole asteroid, but eventually you'll drill a hole straight through it while collecting like half of its resources (in between blowing up annoying pirates and aliens). It helps if you have a good book to read in the meantime :D

Should point out that some people purposely don't build as big as possible.... just sayin.

Right but this player is trying to make is tseem like they've tried everything possible to get the highest yeild from salavaging and claiming that the yield is small regardless, yet uses an example like "8 salvaging lasers". Regardless of how you build the point still stands that you will obviously get sub par yields from salavaging lasers if you're not using more than 8.

I shouldnt mention that i only had 4 then? hehe

I get you tho. I will be trying out cherry picking the soft blocks starting today.

If you're after modules and turrets there's no difference. But regular guns got zero salvaging efficiency. Later on popping special blocks with salvaging beams yields far more and far faster building materials than mining does.
Tis true

One thing a lot of people do not realize is that salvage turrets work wonders on LIVE targets as soon as the shields drop. There is no need to swap turrets at all. I did my first playthrough with 20 offensive and 10 salvage turrets and never swapped except for the last boss. In fact I think salvage turrets do more dmg on hull than weapons do.

An hour ago I had a 120k mat ship i was salvaging. used strictly salvage beams to see how much resources it gave. I think it may be broken as the average percentage was 28, yet I only got about 2300 resources after hitting every last part.

I think the quality of the salvaging laser (iron, titanium, naonite, trinium etc etc) may play a role in this as well? Also the yields are probably rounded down, so for instance a component with 3 titanium and you have 23% efficiency the yield is 0.69 but probably rounds to 0. These factors and the stray ore that flies off that doesn't get picked up may explain the desparity in yield that you are experiencing.

Also higher tiers may increase the speed of salvaging, I know that to be the case with mining lasers.

As for their damage, I usually try to kill things from range and while I'm sure there are longer range turrets the ones I have currently are mostly around 1km. Vs 5-8km for most the weapons I use. But probably useful for quickly eliminating weak enemies, or even eating their resources without wasting any to damage heh.

If you are going for loot, use railguns or missiles on wrecks. If you are going for resources or both, use salavgers. I've noticed more module drops when using fighters to break upp wrecks, but that just may be because they are so thorough.

Salvage beams has no effect on the probability of item drops. They simply extract materials based on their efficiency. They're particularly good when used on expensive, low-HP blocks like shield and power generators.

playing 2nd playthru without any trading for profit, it's been rough but I am preparing to do this (drones) this weekend.

Salvaging with decent turrets is the #1 best way in game to get mats. I would have taken me days to mine up 7 milllion Xanion, but I got that in about 3 hours with salvaging not to mention the ungodly number of crap turrets and upgrades.
