Usually when I create something its just random stuff thrown together and it looks fantastic. When I try. I looks horrible.

Huh
This game lends itself quite readily to randomly mashing parts on.

I model, and sample. A bridge from one ship online the front from another, I always start from scratch and expand working in survival as I build better more practical designs when working in constraints. I have something crazy in the works atm

Little bit of everything for me. My own ideas, inspiration from designs in fiction, movies, tv, games, and inspiration from other random designs I find searching online.

If it's aesthetics you're concerned with then something like pinterest[uk.pinterest.com] is a great source of inspiration. Search Spaceships and you'll find plenty.

I like making big blocks of what I need, then making huge thin slabs of armor and such for the decoration, no screenshots for you though.

I just make simple shapes squares-triangles-rectangles, and mirror top to bottom left to right very effective way to build a ship Some insects is inspiration for me scorpions praying mantis.I like to be original with my designs and also the shock factor if you saw a flying scorpion in space how would you react a dragon fly the list goes on lol.
I use google and bing search space ships and any related searches. Be surprised how much is untouched so far, in the recreation department of building. Im currently working on something inspired by an astro empires ship.

this is exactly how i do it. i even save the base building blocks that I create (usually an armored cube containing Crew Quarters and a generator) and then go from their with small, detailed pieces

currently i use a single ship for my builds starting from iron. aside of that i set a theme or style for the final design.

my current build follows a more terran/naval style set as the theme. like most ships it all starts with a big block containing everything i need for the first couple sectors. then i add a first layer of armor and extrude the whole design in one direction following the theme (if i started with the front i etrude the back; if its the bridge i extrude downwards). the shipbuildup happenes stepbystep always trying to balance the ratio of armor and shipstats.

for details on finished parts i tend to use pinterest for reference pics

I look to other games, and movies. Homeworld 1-2, Homeworld Cataclysm, Elite Dangerous, X3 series, Dawn of War 40k series, Empyrion(although that varies from my stuff I made up to others), Mass Effect series, and lastly Dead Space. As for movies, I look to so many it would take all night to name them. However I will name a few, Space Truckers, FireFly, Dark Matter, SG1, Stargate Universe, and BattleStar Galactica.
