Planets update
There are planets in many sectors sitting there in the background. Being a space game, how to do think they should be incorperated into the game and what purpose do you think they will serve?

I would implement a planetary system not in the way like SE did, but more like in 4x games. Every system has a planet, wich cannot be physically visited. But some kind of a planetary-options-screen to offer possibilities like building or harvesting, also depending on planet type.

It is interesting idea and probably the one they are going to use initally. Problem is this game doesn't have much depth compared to other space games (though not as shallow as NMS.) There is only so much you can build (for normal people) People are going to want more then just what is now in time assuming Avorion doesn't get replaced by another space game

Well, since i'm not a developer, and am not 100% on the devs vision of the game, it's hard to go that direction ;p. But to me i've enjoyed Avorion for the spaceship creating, in space. If it came down to some kind of planet interaction, I would probably limit it to just planetary interaction from space, with mechanisms similar to how mines and stations currently work, or something like eve - building up a colony on the planet with various prefabs that do different things to generate resources.

If Avorion was a much larger game in both structure, resource, and finances, I would really like to have a character that i can use to walk around my ship with, or land on a planet if it went that far. But if it's just going to be a spaceship, atmospheric flight seems a bit... purposeless? Though i guess nothing's purposeless when it comes to atmosphere ^_^.

Understandable, though i'd like to visit planets, or at least their atmosphere. I could see a planet with procedurally generated cities being awesome to fly above (and definintly not to crash into :D )

Now I what to know, what do you mean by colony? What benefit would that give to the player?

Ah hah, that actually would be really neat to fly through generated cities like that, no doubt!

By colony, i mean placing a colony on the planet, and selecting and building modules on the planet to grow the colony. Growing the colony could be anywhere from adding factories, mines, to collecting crops and constructing residentials for tax income. It would be like the current mine and base implimentation, but extended to allow much more flexibility and possibility.

It would just be through a UI though, rather than actually visiting the planet. It's not as pretty and awing, but it saves on programming and performance struggles.
Claim planets and protect them by our custom AI ships?
Planets grant bonuses to the owner, as a multiplier in ores gathering or something. with a time limit of use for each planet
An idea

I don't think that is the direction they are going in at the moment. I expect the devs will make it so you able to make a colony-ish with space stations. A habatat station just like the AI sectors, food, mining, etc

Claim planets, maybe. However protecting them with AI ships will require the planets to become a physical object, not just a background image. I don't think that is the direction the devs will go in. If they add physical planets, it will probably be AI only with AI facilities, mines, etc. that you can interact with like a normal space station

The current base implimentation is such that you can already do what the AI does with bases (albeit, not all of them are buildable yet). I have like 14 bases, which is why i'd do planetside colonization differently. Instead of having to build a base for every specific resource, you could colonize a planet and build up that planet to do multiple things, in accordance to what the planet size and type would allow.

Space bases are very limited, and quite annoying how many of them you have to create in order to get any product line actually going.

I see player factions with many stations to be somthing for co-op, not as much single player though it is still early early access. How would colonies be attacked or have interactions with AI? I don't see planetside colonies becoming a thing until a physical planet is made. A colony station that number of activities is determined by size seems more likely and adaptable to single player

There is no difference between multiplayer and singleplayer in the bases present in Avorion. The Ai interact with your bases in the exact same way that a player would (except players who just want to blow up your base for no reason, but that's something else entirely). The only difference really is that you have the option to let people build your base. Other than that, players and AI still purchase and sell goods the same.

As for the AI interaction of colonies, i was thinking about that myself, mostly about the attacking part. The interactions such as trade, could still be done from a distance. You wouldn't need to go planetside to make all that work, so that's not an issue.

For attacking though? I suppose something along the lines of the planned boarding parties. Infantry maybe?

planets are already set up so they can do *some* stuff witht hem, afterall they are interactable objects... it just takes awhile to fly to them. but once you do there is a "press ZXY to interact" but ti doesn't do anythign yet.

There doesn't seem to be anything selectable, and i figured for now they were just background images. That is interesting though, will have to take this for a test drive.

I didn't realise it was possible to get close enough to interact with planets - will have to test that. :)

With something like this baby steps is probably best I.E. make it so it's possible and easy to visit and orbit planets first. This opens up lots of new game play opportunities and nice sights; whether you get to them via a mini in-system jump or some sort or super boost mode remains to be seen.

Once you can visit them however the devs can then add more complexity / building / landing later.

Ascent lets you build colonies on planets, but it's a little less casual than avorion

Talk about a shock. I just wanted a discrete link not a billboard (I removed the link cos it was sooo in yo face).
