I was going through old games in my steam library, and realised I had this game. Thought I might give it a try, as I am a crpg fan. I remember this game got a lot of stick at launch and wanted to see what it was like. Then I came to the forum and saw that it wasn't being supported anymore. This quote made me laugh though, so not all bad!
What they should have done was publish the server software, preferably open source, so that anybody could host it ourselves.
It's very sad to see games being shut down and become unavailable. Guess what's the only place we can get this game now.
I remember requesting/suggesting during development that they implement direct connect to IP. Specifically in case this exact thing happened
If we'd need to connect to their server, then it's not a simple matter of directly connecting to IP. I guess u mean somebody run the game and open connection for others to join. There must be a separate software they used to run the server, and games connected as clients.
It's better to have this software separated from the game, so we can host it on VPS. If the server is bound to the game, we're unable to do that because we'd need to run Steam client and the game with its graph on the server.
Ark devs did it pretty well, we can host server anywhere without needing game license and can develop mods to it. It's just not open source, but it's being supported. There are even companies providing hosting service so that we get everything set and can just customize our server.
I think the issue was that they got a timed license. They should have acquired a lifetime license for this game. It's not sustainable to sell the game under lifetime license and rely on timed one to keep it on store.
It's expected that a few years after release the sales will drop, as the income. Of course they won't be able to renew the D&D license when the game isn't selling much anymore, and then they'll lose the right to keep selling it.
Many softhouses that had made D&D based games in the past had created their own system for new games. They lose sales, but they assure they don't rely on other companies.
Yeah, it's still a great game. But...the only people who care are those who found out about it well after it was released...thus making us immune to the overwhelming hatred and bias against it.
I was there for it all. At times it did seem like NSpace were out of their depth and didn't really know what to anticipate in terms of what the community wanted. I remember trying to suggest(well before the closed down) that they should make the game capable of diretct connections, instead of a server for multiplayer, for is and when NSpace ever closed down, we could still play. Hell, before the EE of NWN and BG(1/2) folks were still playing, modding and hosting games well after Gamespy shut down. They had no foresight for a lot of things.
But I also thought the community was very toxic too.
They game wasn't perfect by any means but there were some of us that were happy with what we were given and saw the potential. There were DM ran campaigns in the running which were fun.
Or Anyone Who Play on Solasta ?
I have solasta but really struggling to get into it.
If a few other players have it and want to play together (UK times?) I would be keen.
I am giving up on this game now forever. I just thank God that I never spent time making any mods, or designing extra levels for the 'DM' option.
I can sympathise with anyone here who did spend their hard earned time, and cash on this project which was doomed almost from launch!
