Ideas to defend an open base
Hello, everyone!

I got a little tired of creating bases that are just a huge building divided by rooms, each to their purpose, and right now I'm building a base with streets and separated buildings (including separated houses to each colonist) and putting some flowers and trees on the streets as well. Of course, if a snowstorm or toxic fallout comes in, roof construction over the walking path is priority 1. The problem is... defenses.

I would ask your ideas about defenses in order to fight centipedes and slicers roaming the streets of your colony after they arrived by drop pods or ancient ships, far away from your OP killbox in the entrance of your colony.

Certainly, keeping an eye on the wealth of the colony is important to prevent raids with many points and five centipedes appearing in the door of your dining room.

Do you believe that creating chock points (places with barracks and maybe two turrets) scattered through the colony might be better than just equally spreading turrets left and right?

I have noticed that mechanoids tend to attack objects in the street even while being shot at. That might be exploitable in a street defense strategy because they approach it to melee range despite having ranged weapons with them.

Would your streets have a special design to be more defensive?

Some points I have figured out:

- Non-flammable walls and streets everywhere;
- Firefoam spread over farms;
- Roofs on walking paths properly lit to prevent pawn speed reduction by walking in the darkness.

Suggestions with mods are welcome as well.

Thanks for your time and I wish you a prosper colony - until the next ancient ship lands in your dining room, at least.

If you don't like mechanoids, then there is a mod to remove mechanoid raids.

If you want to keep mechanoids, then get a mod called Ed-Embrasures. This lets you build walls that your colonists can hide behind and shoot from (the enemy can also shoot/hit you but not as easily so it is not too powerful).
When you make your open city layout, simply make wide lanes thru the city, and in certain spots/intersections make little 'guardtowers' (4 embrasure walls, door to get in, roof) so you can put colonists in it during emergencies to defend against any attacks. I would suggest putting towers on all outskirts, and sides, of your city also...since sometimes raiders don't run into towns, they aim for important/expensive items like Air Conditioners/power generators/etc...

I personally use over 50 mods, and I highly recommend using mods (either to make games easier or to just give you alot more fun things to do, farm, or craft).

Hope that helps.
For open-plan bases, I like to build a "panic room"/bunker towards the center of the base, with a big wide road going north-south, and east-west, and the bunker in the middle of it (like the + sign). That way, it'll cover any approach the enemy makes into the base.

I've noticed that as a raid progresses, raiders will split up, so by the time they reach your base's center, you can defeat them one-by-one.
@Grey Buddhist and @Captain Kaivarian, thanks for the comment!

For drama sake, let's keep the mechanoids. Just can't see how to deal with 4 centipedes walking the streets... well, dev mode is here to tune the challenge as we want. I use hundreds of mods and can't imagine myself playing without them, as IMO they improve the game a lot.

Embrausures are awesome to protect the turrets in a choke point or bunker as Captain Kaivarian mentioned.

Captain, the + form bunker in the middle of the colony is an awesome idea, like a giant tower of defense with 2 long range turrets each side and 2 short range as well, covered by embrausures and leaving space for colonists to shoot behind them. Probably should prepare a shelf inside with survival meals for 2 days at least. Can't wait to build my own bunker and see war over the colony!

Cheers!
I tend to have an outer wall with shielded bunkers... mind you, this is way back in A17. Now the bunkers don't have fancy shields, just a layer of sandbags. The shields were just too OP until raids became really frightfully large. Also it's the 'evolution of the blackjack town' :D

@Psyra, congratulations on that amazing castle! The mod for shields is still up and I use it as well. Should surelly build one in my bunker!

@static, thanks for the mods, I already use the Defensive Positions and I took a look at the other mods... having an Embrausure of 2000 hit points is very tempting...

Happy to offer up some new options for you. Trench and bunker systems are mighty useful and they look damn cool when they're well designed. Bunkers can be resource intensive to build but it's often a smart move to have one just in case disaster strikes. Enjoy!
